Small Spaces: How To Make The Most of Compact Rooms

Let’s face it, smaller homes are far trickier to design. However, thanks to modern innovations and some space saving tricks, you can still create a beautiful and functional retreat, no matter the size. Here we show you how you can make the most of compact rooms and small spaces.

Keeping things light and airy will do wonders in a smaller room. Keep clutter to a minimum and ensure that you have a clean palette to work with so that you can maximize the entire room, without any distractions.

Next, think outside of the box when it comes to furniture and storage. Many modern small homes call for furniture that is dual-purpose. A sleeper-couch is an ideal example – one that can be used as a bed at night, but a couch in the day. Furniture with hidden storage is another little trick of the trade in compact rooms. Think under-bed or even under-stair storage and consider every little nook as a possible place to utilise clever storage.

In a small bedroom, you will also need to plan the space accordingly so that it doesn’t feel claustrophobic. Instead of a large dresser or wardrobe, why not opt for hanging rod storage and an open-plan closet to maximise the space. Choose smaller bedside tables or a simple shelf that can be mounted next to your bed instead. This will also free up some much needed floor space in a small bedroom.

Consider the walls as a viable option for decor and storage in compact spaces. Built-in units can often be customised to fit into irregular spaces and make the most of oddly shaped walls and corners. A simple shelf can be mounted above doorways or along sections of the wall to further make the most of room storage in a small room.

Whichever your choice, be sure to carefully consider your options and make the most of your smaller spaces.
