Mud Studio’s majestic clay chandeliers

Akin to works of art, Mud Studio’s majestic clay chandeliers are sought the world over for their unique character and tactile appeal.

Inspired by South Africa’s rich cultural heritage, drawing on traditional arts and crafts techniques, such as beading, and making use of local materials, the light fittings imbue contemporary spaces, from penthouses to resorts and designer retail spaces, with handmade gravitas.

The studio’s latest project is no different. Located in Miami, USA, Mud Studio created a custom chandelier for Mila restaurant.

A distinctly curated rooftop space, the restaurant’s design fuses Cycladic design principles with Wabi-Sabi details for a truly unique and dynamic space – the perfect setting for a one-of-a-kind Mud Studio piece.

“The focal point of the space is a feature light fitting with a 12-metre beaded curtain – carefully produced using handmade clay beads and weighing 350kg,” explains Werner Du Tiot, who owns and operates the studio with his wife, Philippa.

“We had to ship it over in pieces – very carefully!

“We also made four big Hula clay bead chandeliers with brass detailing for the restaurant and created two massive ceiling installations for the outdoor eating areas. The latter was no easy task but we enjoyed creating it immensely. Plus, the result is spectacular.”

Based in Port Alfred, in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, MUD Studio has been the go-to for high-design ceramic decor since the creation of its first clay bead chandelier 18 years ago. The studio also manufactures bespoke furniture and stoneware dinnerware., as well as original artwork.
