LIGHTING UP UMHLANGA
The Lighting Warehouse is bringing a supersized new design destination to KwaZulu-Natal this October — with 1,500m² of lighting inspiration under one roof. Umhlanga is about to get a whole lot brighter.
This October, The Lighting Warehouse will open the doors to its new KwaZulu-Natal store at 9 Tetford Circle, Umhlanga. At an impressive 1,500m², the new space has been conceived as much more than a traditional lighting shop. Instead, it promises an immersive showroom where homeowners, decorators and design professionals can experience the transformative power of good lighting first-hand.
The move into KZN is a natural next step for the brand. Through its established online business, The Lighting Warehouse has seen strong and growing demand from customers throughout the province — and the new Umhlanga destination will bring its extensive product offering closer to them.
“Our online business has given us valuable insight into where our customers are shopping from, and KZN has consistently been an important market for us,” says Melissa Davidson of The Lighting Warehouse. “Opening in Umhlanga allows us to bring The Lighting Warehouse and our product offering much closer to these customers.”
A SHOWROOM DESIGNED TO INSPIRE
Lighting may be one of the most powerful elements in an interior, but selecting the right fitting isn’t always straightforward. Scale, colour temperature, finish and placement can completely change how a room looks and feels.
The new Umhlanga showroom has been designed with this in mind.
A clean, neutral interior puts the products centre stage, while clearly defined display areas help shoppers navigate the extensive collection and compare styles, sizes, finishes and lighting categories with ease.
“Lighting can sometimes feel overwhelming because there are so many options to consider,” explains Davidson. “We have designed the store to make that process easier and more enjoyable, while still creating a space that feels inspiring.”
Importantly, wherever possible, fittings will be displayed illuminated. It’s a simple detail that makes an enormous difference: shoppers can see not only what a pendant, chandelier or wall light looks like, but how it casts light, creates atmosphere and interacts with the surrounding space.
SOMETHING FOR EVERY ROOM
From a sculptural pendant suspended above a dining table to discreet task lighting in a home office, the new store is designed to address virtually every lighting requirement.
The collection spans pendants, chandeliers, ceiling and wall lights, spotlights, desk and table lamps, outdoor and solar lighting, integrated LED designs, ceiling fans and globes.
Decorative lighting will take a particularly prominent role. Expect contemporary pendants, elegant glass designs, modern chandeliers, natural and woven pieces and statement-making fittings created for kitchens, dining areas, entrance halls and dramatic double-volume spaces.
The material palette reflects some of the strongest directions in contemporary interiors, too. Black remains an enduring favourite, joined by warmer metallic finishes such as gold and antique brass, atmospheric smoked glass and tactile natural textures.
“Lighting is an incredibly visual purchase,” says Davidson. “Shopping online offers enormous convenience, but there is a real benefit to seeing the size, colour and finish of a fitting in person, and particularly to seeing what it looks like illuminated.”
WHY UMHLANGA — AND WHY NOW?
The choice of Umhlanga is no coincidence.
Situated within Durban’s rapidly developing northern corridor, the area combines a thriving residential market with significant commercial and development activity. It makes the new store ideally positioned to serve customers from Umhlanga and Durban as well as the broader KwaZulu-Natal market.
While homeowners building, renovating or simply refreshing a room will find plenty to explore, the showroom is also intended as a resource for interior designers, architects, developers and other design and construction professionals working across residential and commercial projects.
“Umhlanga gives us an excellent base from which to serve customers across the broader KZN market,” Davidson says. “There is significant activity in the region, and we know from our online sales that the demand for our products is already there.”
THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
The Umhlanga opening also reflects a changing way of shopping for the home.
Rather than viewing digital and bricks-and-mortar retail as competitors, The Lighting Warehouse sees the two as part of the same journey. Customers might begin by browsing styles and researching options online before visiting the showroom to see their shortlist in person, compare finishes and proportions, and ask the team for advice.
“We see online and physical retail as complementary,” says Davidson. “Customers can browse and research online, then come into the store to experience products, compare options and get advice from our team.”
And when it comes to lighting, that ability to experience a product matters. The right fitting does far more than illuminate a room. It can establish a focal point, highlight architectural details, soften an interior or completely alter its mood.
“Ultimately, we want them to leave feeling confident about their choices and inspired by what the right lighting can do for their space,” Davidson concludes
