7 design trends you need to try today
From matte black fixtures to geometric wallpaper, top designers weigh in on the hottest trends you’ll be dying to try this season. Thanks to HGTV, they asked top international designers about their favourite design trends. This is what they had to say:
Trend: Matte Black Fixtures
“Matte black and brushed gold fixtures are one of my favourite things to use right now. They can really add the perfect finishing touch to a space and can even be the centrepiece. This is the easiest one to add to your own home. Just be sure to think about the other accents, like lights and cabinet pulls, that the fixture will need to coordinate with.” — Jordan Iverson, Iverson Signature Homes Trend: Wood Countertops
“Don’t go overboard, but mixing in a wood island countertop or butcher block outer cabinet adds an organic, warm feel to any space. Many times it’s going to save you money versus a stone top.” — Jordan Iverson, Iverson Signature Homes Trend: Unexpected Focal Points
“I love the unexpected juxtaposition of modern furnishings with an eclectic pop of something stylistically interesting. I like to mix styles in a way that there’s an underlying aesthetic running through the home, yet unexpected details throughout that serve as focal points (like a great wallcovering).” — Lauren Coburn, Lauren Coburn LLC Trend: Colourful, Open Kitchens
“My clients are really embracing the bright and airy kitchen concept, so I’m now designing kitchens with as many windows as possible. Upper cabinets are slowly going away, creating a kitchen that’s much brighter than before. I’m using more open shelving, too. And to keep kitchens bright, I like using lots of colour either in painted cabinets or a colourful backsplash tile.” — Jeff Troyer, Jeff W Troyer Associates Trend: Geometric Wallpaper
“Wallpaper today is alive and kicking. Besides the traditional wallpapers we know and love, contemporary, geometric patterns have become extremely popular — especially when blocked or layered upon seagrass or other natural fibers.” — Kerrie Kelly, Kerrie Kelly Design Lab Trend: Large-Scale Lighting
“Go for overscale dining room light fixtures. Lanterns, chandeliers — it doesn’t matter. Groups of two or three, depending on the size, work best for full impact.” — Nancy Boland, Duet Design Group Trend: Gems + Geodes
“I’ve noticed that interiors have moved towards a more edgy, rock ‘n’ roll vibe that’s still sleek and refined. Geodes, faceted gems and Lucite accessories are a few details that can add serious shine to a space.” — Ann Lowengart, Ann Lowengart Interiors
