Design Guide: 10 Tips Before Your Renovate The Kitchen

It’s the heart of the home and rightly so. Your kitchen should be a hub that can be enjoyed by the whole family. If this space is stuck in a different decade, perhaps it is time to renovate your kitchen and bring it into 2021. Here are 10 tips to help you out before you rebuild.

Space

Space planning is the first step to creating a new kitchen. Will you be using your existing kitchen shell or will you need to break down walls, extend and restructure the space entirely? This will certainly have an impact on your budget and timeline. Either, space planning cannot be overlooked. We advise speaking to a kitchen planner in advance to help you visualise a new kitchen for optimal functionality and style.

Layout

Your new layout needs to consider the placement of all the key kitchen pieces that will make your space operational. Are you moving plumbing and electrical points? These will need to be planned into your new layout and discussed with your kitchen designer. Are you adding a kitchen island? Ensure that you choose the right size that works in the space.

Lighting

Illumination is key in a modern kitchen. You can’t simply rely on an overhead light fixture to meet all your needs. Undercounter lighting, wall-mounted fittings and even LED cabinets lights can all add to the value of your new space. Think about the areas where you will be working in your kitchen and how best to illuminate each area.

Appliances

Will you be upgrading your appliances? With so many options and new technology on the market today, it is definitely worth doing your research. Gas or electrical oven? Single or double door fridge? Consider your budget and available space before investing in these big ticket items. Chat to an electrician about those big pieces that will need to be professionally installed.

Cabinets

What’s a kitchen without adequate storage and cabinetry? In a smaller kitchen, you may need to get innovative with storage and maximise the space with cabinets that reach all the way to the ceiling. Modern cabinet finishes should also be considered. Will you choose sleek metal handles or go for a more seamless look? Contemporary white doors are often the popular choice, but black, wood and even textured cabinets continue to wow.

Countertops

The debate about which countertop is best continues in 2021. With so many options, it is easy to get lost in the sea of possibilities. We recommend choosing the best quality you can afford. Opt for durable, easy to maintain counters that will last for a long time. Some of our favourites include marble, quartz and stone counters.

Floors

Don’t neglect your kitchen flooring. Choose materials that are not only hard-wearing but also waterproof and easy to clean. Your kitchen will most likely get some of the heaviest footfall in your home, so your floors will need to do double duty. Tiles are a popular choice, as well as luxury vinyl tiles which are easy to maintain.

Colour Trends

Trends come and go. In the kitchen, we advise going with something more classic to ensure longevity. A base of neutrals is always a winner. White and grey kitchens are some of our favourites with a pop of colour that you incorporate through decor and accessories. If you need a fresh burst of colour, you could also opt for a patterned backsplash behind the sink.

Sanitaryware

Update your kitchen sanitaryware and taps to catch up with the times. We love a matte black option in the kitchen for a truly trendy and inspired look. Metals such as brass are also hot at the moment. If you’re looking for a new sink, go for something sleek and functional. Bigger, farmhouse sinks are still a great option in a family home.

Organize

Ensure that your new kitchen is streamlined and organised with the right choice of accessories and storage. Floating shelves offer much-needed off the floor storage while baskets, cabinets and drawers can be fully customised to suit your space and needs. Keep counters clean for a more productive and streamlined environment.
