Fire, Food and Focus: Designing Outdoor Spaces That Invite You In

In Gauteng, we know how to “kuier”. Someone lights the fire, the kids disappear into the garden, and before long, there’s an argument over who has the right to the braai tongs.

By comparison, in the Cape, the invitation often leads elsewhere: to a wine farm, a restaurant overlooking the beach, or a long table set against the backdrop of the Mountain. Entertaining has traditionally felt outward-facing in the Cape. Yet André from Signi Fires notes a renewed focus on bringing that experience home. Outdoor living spaces are being reconsidered, not as leftover square metres but as important parts of one’s home.

So what could that look like in your own space?

Start with scale.

If you have a generous patio or covered terrace that opens onto the garden, consider anchoring it with a sculptural element. For instance, a Silo Suspended Fireplace, centred beneath a high roofline, brings fire into architectural focus. Its canopy and flue add a sense of grandeur, while the fire itself sets the tone for the entire space, creating an outdoor lounge that remains functional well after sunset.

BUILT IN BRAAI in Black-2

Pair that with a Gas and Wood Combination Braai built into a chimney breast. It gives you two options: quick gas cooking during the week and wood-fired flavour when time allows. In expansive gardens, a Nature Fire Pit can extend the entertaining zone beyond the covered area, encouraging guests to drift between spaces.

Now imagine the opposite…

A more compact courtyard. A townhouse patio. A balcony for a more intimate gathering.

Here, restraint comes into play. Instead of a built-in braai, a Drop-In Gas Braai or even a freestanding Ember Wood and Charcoal Braai can be integrated into a slim counter or positioned against a wall. The clean lines keep the area feeling open, while still offering everything you expect of a serious braai.

In the Garden Route, design requires another layer of thought completely. With weather that often shifts through four seasons in a single day, consider a semi-enclosed patio with stacking doors. A Ball Suspended Fireplace under cover provides warmth when the wind picks up, while a Crete Wood-Burning Fire Pit in a sheltered corner of the garden offers an alternative gathering point on calmer days. The key is flexibility, with spaces that can open wide in summer and close in winter without losing their connection to the outdoors.

And then there is cooking beyond the braai. A Cucina wood-fired pizza oven brings Italian theatre to larger entertainment areas, while in tighter spaces the Nuovo gas pizza oven offers similar flavour with minimal installation and is easy to position on an existing counter.

Designing an outdoor space, large or small, comes down to one simple idea: it should feel like a natural extension of your home. By selecting specialised products that suit your climate, architecture and available space, you create an area that works throughout the year, not just on perfect summer days.

We have touched on only a handful of Signi Fires products here. The full range extends far beyond these examples, offering options for different layouts, fuel preferences and design styles. To find a Signi Fires-approved agent in your area, visit:
