Should you seal your natural stone countertop?
You should always consider sealing any natural stone countertop as a result of all natural material being permeable. Contact your trusted installer for advice.
Marbles are generally more porous than granites and might need additional care. However, Stone Connection experts recommend sealing all natural stone. A properly done sealing will not only keep your surfaces resistant for decades, but will ensure bacterial free and highly hygienic environments in your home.
Sealing Ensures:
- A bacteria-free surface
- Acid stain resistance
- Maintaining the stone’s natural beauty
How to DIY seal your natural stone countertop or wall cladding?
Read and follow the instructions recommended on your sealant product, as use and time may vary.
Depending on your type of Natural Stone, seal it with a good quality sealer once every 3 to 6 months or depending on a water test Make sure the surface of the stone is clean, free from dust or any oily marks, and dry. Once your surface is clean and dry you can apply your sealer. You will need a cloth or sponge to apply the sealer and a clean cloth to wipe dry after the application of the sealer.
You have to apply the sealer onto your natural stone surfaces and wait approximately 5 minutes. Then with your secondary dry cloth, you can wipe off the residue from the surface of the stone. Do a water test after sealing to see whether another coat of sealer is needed. Make sure that you do not seal any stains into your material.
How to clean your natural stone?
When cleaning your natural stone, be it granite, sandstone, or onyx, make sure your detergent is mild and not too harsh. Stay away from detergents with ammonia or any strong acidic chemicals.
For day-to-day cleaning, use a stone care cleaner alternatively, a mix of water and dishwashing detergent. Strong chemicals and solvents tend to damage the stone. As such, avoid using harsh chemicals and avoid prolonged running in one spot when cleaning.
