SuperRational Modular Outdoor Sofas by Haldane Martin | Flexible Design for Contemporary Living
A simple form repeated like a fractal, Haldane Martin’s SuperRational collection offers modular sofas infused with graphic elements of the 1980s. Each unit functions as a building block that can be combined and reconfigured to suit different modes of outdoor relaxation.
Light, open stainless-steel frames create a playful contrast with weighty Memphis-style upholstery. Bold, geometric blocks of foam encased in subtly textured fabrics with retro piping sit atop generously proportioned graphic 100mm x 100mm wire grids—an intentional nod to Memphis design, but rendered in finishes that are more wearable and contemporary.
According to the designer, the inspiration behind the SuperRational Sofa stems from a very specific memory. “When I was a design student, there was an image that really intrigued me. The Memphis boxing ring sofa. Its proper name is Tawaraya, designed by Masanori Umeda. The photograph showed the whole Memphis group gathered on it, headed by Ettore Sottsass. It was described as a space for intellectual sparring. But it looked like the beginning of something far more intimate.”
The SuperRational collection comprises one-seater units and an ottoman, which can be repeated and arranged to form multiple compositions. It becomes a playful setting to stretch out and sunbathe, seating arranged around a fire pit, or an L-shaped couch positioned opposite a pool—without the need for permanent installation. The modular nature of the SuperRational sofas allows for flexibility, enabling users to adapt relaxation and entertainment areas as needed while remaining suitable for outdoor use.
The open wire grid frames are striking design features that also serve a practical purpose, allowing water to drain through easily and ensuring that cushions dry quickly. The upholstery is completely separate from the frame, meaning covers can be removed with ease, washed, or even replaced over time.
Like a fractal in nature, the rational form of the square is repeated at every scale. A square conversation pit is formed from square sofa modules, with square mattresses placed atop a square wire grid. It reflects a super rational logic that extends seamlessly from plan to detail.
