Klooftique: 80’s Inspiration For Today
Visit the Klooftique showroom this summer at 87 Kloof Street, Cape Town and come and share in the celebration of 50 years in the South African design trade. 2023 marks 50 years since Klooftique’s doors were first opened by Gerald and Beulah Furman in 1973 at 87 Kloof street.
What began as a humble furniture restoration and retail space, would eventually become one of South Africa’s premier brands and manufacturers of handcrafted, bespoke heirloom furniture – all while remaining a family-owned business.
Take a trip down memory lane with us as we humbly look back on 5 decades of inspiration, growth, and immense pride and gratitude at what we’ve been able to achieve in the last 50 years.
Following in his father, Gerald Furman’s footsteps, Jarome Furman and his wife, Marianna Furman would eventually take over the reins. And with a keen eye for design, Jarome and Marianna would spend the next few decades elevating Klooftique as a brand and work to continuously remain ahead of the curve in craftsmanship and design.
A staple of Kloof street, the building housing our showroom is an official Heritage building, and has had its fair share of facelifts over the years.
Jarome and Marianna Furman have long prescribed the ancient Japanese philosophy of Wabi Sabi. In essence, in Japanese aesthetics, wabi sabi centres on embracing the imperfect and finding the beauty in it. This philosophy is always top of mind at Klooftique. From sourcing leather, timber and finishes – down to the natural, handcrafted decor accessories selected for our showroom.
“In keeping with the notion of beauty in imperfection, we are creating furniture that, as an expression of individuality, simplicity and a lifestyle, is detached from materialism and mass production.” – Jarome Furman
