Choose The Perfect Dining Table from Melonwoods Wooden Furniture
When wanting to purchase a dining table, there are a couple of points to take into consideration. Find the table that suits you and discover more at Melonwoods.
Here we answer all your questions:
1. Dining Table Size and Fit:
Will it fit in my space?
Allow 91 cm clearance around the table edges to ensure that chairs can be comfortably pulled out and people can move around freely.
Visualise the space by using masking tape or cardboard cut-outs to outline the dimensions of the table on the floor. This can help you visualise how much space the table will occupy and whether it feels proportionate to the room.
How many people can it seat comfortably?
Allow 60cm per dining chair at the table plus add an additional 20cm to account for the table legs. So, for example, a 6-seater table should be at least 140cm x 80cm in size and a 10-seater table at least 260cm x 80cm.
2. Dining Table Style and Design:
Does it match my existing decor?
Take note of the style, color scheme, and materials of your current furniture pieces in the dining area or adjacent rooms. Are they modern, traditional, rustic, minimalist, etc.?
Is there visual harmony? Imagine or visualise how the dining table will look alongside your current furniture. Will it create a cohesive and harmonious look, or will it clash or stand out in a way that doesn’t fit your desired aesthetic?
What material and finish options are available?
We sell dining tables in all wood types, but predominantly we work in Oak, Blackwood and Ofram wood. We also sell live edge dining tables – these are mostly manufactured using woods such as Canadian Cedar, Oak, Mahogany, Camphor and Iroko. When a customer selects to have a live edge table made we first send them photos of the wood slabs available and they will choose one of these for their table. We finish our tables in a water based sealer.
Does this table come in different finishes / colours?
Yes, there are a few factors that influence the final colour of the table. The wood type is the main factor, but after the wood type is selected we can also use a variety of monocoat stains to create a finish colour. Our stain colours are visible on our website and at our Ballito showroom, but can also be requested from our sales consultants.
3. Functionality
Is the table sturdy and easy to maintain?
A solid wood dining table is generally sturdy and durable, capable of lasting for many years with proper care. Maintenance requirements depend on the type of finish—varnished finishes offer more protection but may need occasional reapplication, while oiled finishes require periodic oiling but develop a rich patina. Regular cleaning with a soft cloth and mild cleaner is usually sufficient.
Solid wood tables are susceptible to scratches and stains, so using coasters and placemats can help protect the surface.
Can the table be customized in size or shape?
Yes, we custom make furniture to your size and shape. We have a range of tables that you can view on our website or at our showroom, but we welcome any pictures or photos of tables that you would like for us to quote on and manufacture. We don’t charge extra for customisation.
4. Dining Table Cost and Quality:
What is the price range?
The price and design greatly influence the price of the table – with a 180cm x 100cm seater starting from R14000 incl VAT.
How long will this table last?
A solid wood dining table can last for decades or even generations with proper care and maintenance, thanks to its durability and ability to withstand regular use.
Are there any warranties?
Melonwoods offers a 6 month cracking and warping warranty on furniture.
5, Delivery and Assembly:
How is delivery handled?
We outsource delivery. When you request a quote from us, we will add a quote for delivery if you choose to have the item delivered to you.
You can, however, also arrange your own collection from our Ballito showroom.
Is assembly required and how difficult is it?
Our tables are delivered pre-assembled. If you are in an outer lying area then we can manufacture the table with legs that disassemble to reduce the cost of delivery. Depending on the style of table, assembly is relatively easy, but we will send you all the information you need to be able to do this.
We hope this has shed some light on how to select the best dining table for your home or project.
