We talked to Roche Bobois about their commitment to sustainable design and their recent SDG Nomination.
A finalist at the 2023 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Awards in the Environmental Preservation category, Roche Bobois was recently commended for its commitment to sustainable development.
With product eco-design and the heart of the company’s environmental strategy, it is working, along with many others in the industry, to transform our societies by combating poverty and ensuring a just transition towards sustainable development by 2030.
“In 2006, we implemented a collaborative approach to eco-design that involves all players in its product development and manufacturing chain,” explains the company. “We developed a tool to assess each product’s degree of eco-design: ECO8.
Developed in collaboration with the French Institute of Technology for Forest-based and Furniture Sectors (FCBA), ECO8 considers criteria based on the analysis of four fundamental stages in a product’s life cycle: materials used, manufacturing, use, and end-of-life management.
“Based on the data collected, each product receives a score of 1 to 4. Those that score 3 or higher are considered eco-designed and identified as such on our website and in the collection catalogues.
“Over and above this approach, Roche Bobois has set itself highly ambitious environmental goals. In particular, the brand has decided to increase the proportion of eco-designed models in its new products by 20% every year, and to achieve 100% sustainable wood procurement by 2025.”
