Studio Lloyd
Handcrafted in Cape Town, South Africa, Studio Lloyd offers discerning customers a selection of award-winning light sculptures, seating and objects.
Founded by designer Ashlee Lloyd in 2016, the studio works closely with its customers to create custom pieces characterised by attention to detail, craftsmanship and quality materials. This includes the studio’s signature material – multifilament braided rope.
“We use various diameters of poly-braided rope that is commonly used for the marine yachting industry,” explains Ashlee. “The material has a built-in composite to hold colour and protects against decomposing, anti-humidity decay, mildew and insect inhabitation. Lastly, our rope is coated in UV protection agents making it a perfect match for outdoor applications.”
The braided rope is offered in a unique range of colours, including opal, malta, ruby, malachite, olivine, alabaster, diamond, jasper and onyx, adding a custom, designer touch to each piece of furniture.
The use of this extremely durable material also speaks to Studio Lloyd’s commitment to sustainability.
“Sustainability for us lies in the longevity of our products,’ says Ashlee. “Longevity is the red thread throughout all our designs. The hospitality and commercial industries used to create a huge amount of design waste because they always wanted a fresh look, new interiors and exteriors, and continuous updates on trends and technology. This mentality is shifting and we as Studio Lloyd are taking full advantage of this movement. We design products that do not need to be exchanged every five years. Our work is functional art made to stay.
“We use solid braid multifilament polypropylene (MFP) rope for all our products. The rope is made of a blend of polypropylene and nylon, it is soft to the touch and flexible, floats in water and is resistant to rot, mildew, and UV light. That is why MFP is one of our favourite and most used materials, especially for our light sculptures. Working with such a strong material ensures high-quality products for indoor and outdoor use as it survives in any climate (desert, tropical, oceanic).”
