OKHA Design Studio

At the forefront of innovative interior architecture and decor in SA, Cape Town-based OKHA Design Studio is well-known for its boundary-pushing ideas, including rarefied handcrafted furniture designs.

In step with their forward-thinking vision, the studio has just unveiled two new contemporary furniture collections: Void and Ambiguous Forms.

“There are shapes within the void,” explains OKHA.

“In the Void series of chairs, counter and barstools, emptiness is filled with energy or vibrations that we connect to on a subconscious, primal level; there is the mystery of the unknown, of what may be. The conundrum and paradox of empty space are that the void can appear to have form and weight.”

The collection takes a reductionist approach to composition and form, instead focusing on the relationship between structure and space, which results in brutal, purist designs.

As OKHA notes; “The chair’s character is purposefully raw and a provocative contradiction of elegance and visual candour.”

The Ambiguous Forms collection, on the other hand, is a limited-edition range of coffee tables exclusively available from LA design gallery, TWENTIETH.

“The sculptural pieces respond to the fluctuating world around us, posing the questions we are all asking or implying. Enigmatic works that trace the outline of the unknowable. Discordant yet resonant. Fluid yet solid,” says OKHA.

Made from various materials, including aluminium, copper, brass and alloy frames paired with unique wooden tops, no two pieces in the collection are the same.

“A black charred stone pine top complements the silvery pitted scarred and polished aluminium of one table for a stark, almost lunar effect. While a rufous rich Salinga wood is juxtaposed with lustrous bronze to radiate both materials in a strange and beautiful union,” says OKHA describing just two of the unique pieces in the collection.
