Helene De Waal, the interior designer and manager at Incanda’s Hermanus showroom, recently completed an extensive and exciting project in Eastcliff, Hermanus in close collaboration with her client, Karin Louw.

Helene walks us through her thought process and how she and her client tackled this project called Mila’s Place.

Mila’s Place

“Karin contacted me near the end of last year, asking me to assist with the renovation and revamping of an investment property that would ultimately be aimed at short-term rental or AirBnB. The small apartment in Bayview had previously been a beautiful old hotel.

I was very excited to be given the opportunity to work on this project, especially because AirBnb’s in Hermanus tend to be exclusive and unique. I knew from the onset that this would be a special project.”

“Karin’s brief was clear and focussed. She wanted a botanical theme throughout the apartment, and she wanted colour – teal to be specific. She also wanted to create a space that would be easy to clean, maintain and that could handle a lot of traffic. Simplicity and durability was key.

We started with the colour of the walls. We decided to go with Arniston White – which I personally love to use when it comes to the interior pallet because it provides a neutral foundation to build on.”

For the kitchen area, we opted for tiles on the floor, sticking to a very neutral, concrete look and feel. For the counter tops we chose Caesarstone Pure White and to further soften the colour scheme, the cupboards were also painted white. To incorporate some colour in the kitchen, a splash back was created out of teal coloured tiles laid out in a herringbone motif.”

“When Karin first walked into our showroom, she fell in love with some curtains we have on display. This particular curtaining fabric from Hertex – Tabi Linen – not only drapes beautifully due to its weight, but also has a lovely semi sheer. New curtains were made up for the apartment – some with patterns and some plain – in combination with matt black rods to pick up on black iron details in the furniture. We used a double rail. The Tabi Linen was used in front for light filtering and at the back we decided on a blockout fabric to ensure privacy.”

“Karin designed her own wallpaper for the main bedroom that features lovely shades of teal. The bay window curtain in this room is my personal favourite as it blends beautifully with the unique, oversized wallpaper.”

“The fact that Incanda is able to customize furniture to a large extent in terms of choices in leather and fabric for upholstery as well as the wood options available is what drew Karin in.

She loved the design of our Vrede chair and chose a stunning fabric from Hertex called Papua Nightfall for the upholstering. This fabric’s design blended in very well with the overall botanical theme. The chairs were paired with our Cape Town couch upholstered in bovine, ginger coloured leather.”

“To keep the pallet as clean and light as possible, we opted for an oak smoke finish on all the wooden furniture.”

“Some gorgeous prints by Natasha van Niekerk served exceptionally well in adding the final touches to this stunning space, while also enhancing the botanical theme.”

“Additional lighting in the form of floor and table lamps helped to create warmth and accents where needed.”

“I had so much fun working with Karin. She not only provided so much creative input from her side but was always open to my ideas and suggestions. This made for a fun, interactive project that in my view, turned out fantastic.”
