LIM Furniture: Locally Crafted Pieces For Contemporary Spaces

LIM is home to minimalist, contemporary, and artisanal furniture, and décor. The collections include locally crafted pieces as well as hand-selected objects from the broader African continent. We chat with the owner Andrea Gazet du Chattelier about their latest furniture for life together with collectable homeware to make your house feel more like home.

What inspires you and helps you create such beautiful interiors?

Personally, I take a lot of joy out of experiencing beautiful spaces. Whether those are natural outdoor spaces (I love being outdoors) or beautifully curated spaces created by people. When I am in a beautiful space that has been intentionally curated it grounds me, and so I am inspired to help people create their own beautiful spaces.

You are known for your contemporary furniture – what draws you to create this look in your furniture pieces?

We believe that when it comes to creating beautiful pieces, less is often more, and that simple, considered, and contemporary pieces have the ability to make the biggest impact.

Which interior designers have influenced your interior style?

Pauline Mutlow (the founder of LIM) was and remains a massive influence on me personally and the LIM brand. Marc Hewson, the head of design and interiors at LIM (I am biased 😊), inspires me daily with his eye for interior design and style.

What is your personal style preference?

A blend of traditional and contemporary elements that naturally blend together, complemented by a neutral colour palette. I love African influenced pieces, not only for their unique and beautiful design, but also for the stories they hold and the cultural significance they bring to a space. I am always on the lookout for unique and one-of-a-kind pieces that have a personal story attached to them, as they add depth and character to my home.

What have been your career highlights?

One of the highlights of my career has been taking on the scary and exciting challenge of running LIM. It has provided me with the opportunity to tap into my creative side, which was very rarely possible in my previous roles in the world of finance. I continue to learn and grow every day, not only in respect to design but also the skills or running a small business in South Africa with all its unique challenges and opportunities!

What do you define as ultimate luxury?

My definition of ultimate luxury is a beautiful space that not only provides comfort and functionality, but also reflects one’s personality and unique style. It’s a place where you can retreat from the world and indulge in the simple pleasures of life, whether that’s curling up with a good book, enjoying a quiet evening with friends and family or lighting a fire on a stormy night to fall asleep next to.

Tell us about your favourites in your latest homeware ranges?

Our range of scatter cushions, made from 100% linen and hand-embroidered, is one of my favourites. With their neutral colour scheme and subtle texture, they are a versatile addition to any interior space, providing both comfort and warmth. Their understated yet elegant design makes them a timeless and enduring choice and I am always amazed by the impact changing a few cushions can have on an entire room.

Tell us about your favourites in your furniture ranges?

My favourite range in our furniture collection has to be the Adrinka range. It’s a unique collection that pays homage to the symbolic carvings of the Ghanaian people, known as Adinkra. The intricate crosshatch carving used in this range is particularly special, as it represents the concept of a good marriage in Ghanaian culture.
