Embrace a Fresh Start with Sustainable Interior Design

As the new year has started to unfold and new trends surface, we are reminded of making sustainable design decisions. The first thing that jumps to mind regarding designing responsibly with sustainability is to utilize green, eco-friendly, or minimalistic design trends, materials, and furnishings.

However, sustainable design is so much more than the above-mentioned labels it has been defined by. A well-designed space naturally incorporates certain design elements which stem and embrace sustainable design. It is important to factor in that materials, furnishings, and fixtures have been sourced and manufactured responsibly in the sense that it does not negatively impact the environment or our local economy.

Sustainable interior design focuses on how the user interacts with the space, what the space evokes withing the user, and how it impacts their mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. There are various ways to achieve this, even if the design aesthetic does not appear to be sustainable from the first glance.

By incorporating biophilic design elements and pairing them with your unique style, you can create a sustainable space that is your design sanctuary. Achieve this by utilizing ample natural light where you can. Add mirrors to a space that will reflect and bounce the natural light in your space, making it airy and inviting. Add some outdoor elements to your space by introducing potted plants to breathe fresh air into your space. Paint your walls with low-VOC paints in light or earthy colour palettes that transcend a welcoming and calm atmosphere.

Additionally introduce natural elements which can provide the opportunity to ground yourself and create a tranquil space. Add natural timber finishes, smooth or textured stone finishes, and linen finishes to your space. Most importantly, do not forget to add elements that reflect your unique personality. Do this through accent walls, display items, or furnishings.

If you do not know where to start and you are feeling overwhelmed, remember that Rome was not built in one day. Start small and take it one step at a time. Try transforming your home foyer by applying some of the biophilic design elements discussed above and create a space you will enjoy living in.
