Concrete, Engineered for the Elements: FLOAT’s Approach to Cold-Climate Design

There is something inherently architectural about concrete in a winter landscape. Its quiet mineral character, natural weight and understated strength sit effortlessly alongside dark timber, glass, steel and pale northern light. Yet when temperatures fall below freezing, material performance becomes just as important as aesthetics.

The answer lies in understanding that freeze-thaw damage is less about temperature itself and more about moisture. When water penetrates conventional concrete and subsequently freezes, it expands, creating internal pressure. Repeated over successive freeze-thaw cycles, this process can eventually contribute to cracking, flaking and spalling.

Performance From Within

At the heart of the panels is Ultra High-Performance Concrete (UHPC), manufactured to create a dense, low-porosity matrix. By limiting the pathways through which water can penetrate the material, less moisture is available to freeze within the concrete — an important consideration for long-term performance in colder climates.

Rather than relying on a single protective surface treatment, FLOAT takes a layered approach. Integral crystalline waterproofing is incorporated into the concrete mix itself, making moisture resistance part of the panel’s internal composition. A deep-penetrating polymer-hybrid sealer is then applied to both the front and back of each panel to further reduce water uptake while retaining concrete’s natural appearance.

It is a considered combination of material density, internal waterproofing and external protection, designed to work together rather than independently.

The Beauty of Authentic Concrete

Performance, however, does not come at the expense of character.

Concrete remains one of architecture’s most expressive materials precisely because of its subtle imperfections, tonal variations and mineral depth. FLOAT’s penetrating sealer is designed to preserve these qualities rather than creating a heavy surface film that disguises the material beneath.

Colour is similarly integrated into the material. FLOAT uses UV-stable iron oxide pigments within the concrete mix, creating through-body colour rather than relying on a painted or printed surface. The result is an authentic concrete finish with the visual depth and individuality that designers seek from the material.

Lightweight, Without Losing Strength

Perhaps one of the most interesting developments is the ability to achieve the presence of architectural concrete without the traditional bulk associated with precast cladding.

At just 13 mm thick, FLOAT panels offer the look and feel of genuine concrete in a significantly lighter format. Their strength comes from the UHPC matrix, reinforcement and controlled manufacturing and curing processes, rather than sheer mass.

The reduced weight can make the panels easier to transport, handle and install while placing less unnecessary load on the structure. It represents a contemporary evolution of concrete: maintaining its sense of permanence while making the material more adaptable to modern architectural applications.

Proven in a Northern Landscape

FLOAT’s approach has also moved beyond theory.

The company’s lightweight concrete panels were used on a project in Latvia in 2019, placing the material within a genuine Northern European environment where buildings are regularly exposed to temperatures below freezing, winter moisture and repeated freeze-thaw conditions.

The setting also demonstrates concrete’s particular visual strength in colder landscapes. Against wet paving, winter skies, timber, glass and dark metal, its restrained surface brings a sense of calm and permanence to architecture.

Detail Matters

Even highly engineered materials depend on considered installation.

In freeze-thaw regions, exterior cladding needs to form part of a carefully resolved building envelope. Substrates, joints, edges, flashings, parapets and drainage all influence how moisture moves around and behind a façade.

For FLOAT installations, correct substrate preparation, appropriate adhesives or fixing systems, joint sealing, edge protection and effective drainage are important considerations. Panel joints in particular need careful attention. This subsequently allows for movement while helping to minimise water ingress.

It is an approach that brings design and technical performance together. A joint establishes the rhythm and scale of a façade, but in demanding climates it must perform as intelligently as it looks.

Concrete for Contemporary Architecture

FLOAT demonstrates how advances in material science are changing perceptions of concrete cladding. Durability no longer needs to be synonymous with excessive thickness and weight, while high performance does not have to compromise the authentic qualities that make concrete so desirable.
