Classic Revivals: South Africa’s Oldest Furniture Manufacturer Crafting Heirlooms Since the 1950s
For more than seven decades, Classic Revivals has been at the heart of South African furniture craftsmanship, shaping heirlooms that carry both history and innovation. Founded in the 1950s by brothers Attilio and Agostiono Rech, who brought their inherited skills from the foothills of Italy’s Dolomite Mountains, the family business quickly established itself as Johannesburg’s premier “Modellers” workshop. Be inspired with Classic Revivals.
Their story, however, begins even earlier. The Rech patriarch, Silvio, was a cabinetmaker of renown, producing church doors and furniture pieces in Italy that endure to this day. Life in the mountains was defined by humble living, communal strength, and deep traditions, values that would later be embedded in the DNA of Classic Revivals.
In 1951, Attilio and Agostiono migrated to South Africa, carrying both skill and vision. By 1953, they had opened their own factory in Johannesburg, introducing European designs and antique reproductions to the local market. Their dream: to create masterpieces for international hotels, embassies, private homes, and institutions, a dream now realised through the labour of five generations.
Today, Classic Revivals remains a family-run business, with elegant showrooms located in Parktown North, Johannesburg, and De Waterkant, Cape Town. Under the stewardship of Fino and Franco Rech, the company has expanded its offering to include both antique reproductions and modern concepts, marrying authenticity with contemporary living.
As South Africa’s oldest furniture manufacturer, Classic Revivals continues to transform premium woods and fabrics into bespoke pieces that are timeless, functional, and destined to be treasured for generations to come.
