Barker Street Furniture: Iconic design
Celebrating an iconic design, MillerKnoll recently unveiled its Knoll Bauhaus-era Collections in a new colour palette.
The expanded palette includes three new finishes for four Bauhaus-era collections, marking the first time the tubular steel collections are being commercially produced in ultra-matte colours.
Imbuing classic shapes with new colour, the MR Chair and MR Tables by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and the Wassily Chair, Cesca Chairs and Stools, and Laccio Tables by Marcel Breuer are now available in white, onyx, and an archival dark red.
Commenting on the new colours, Jonathan Olivares, Senior Vice President of Design at Knoll, said, “When these pieces were first made by workshops in Germany, their frames were painted, giving us a precedent to build on and license to take on the recolouring. Seeing the tubular structures in white, onyx and red, the way these colours interact with the seats and backrests completely changes our perception of the work and allows us to see them with fresh eyes.”
Harking back to the Bauhaus era, the newly launched colours are rooted in this influential institution’s design principles: the dark red ultra-matte finish draws from a Bauhaus colour originally used on the MR Chair, while the white and onyx shades were prized by Bauhaus designers for their ability to reflect or absorb light, enhance geometric shapes and define clean edges.
MillerKnoll is locally available at Barker Street, a supplier of high-quality, corporate, hospitality and retail furniture to the South African market. Apart from stocking an impressive line-up of international brands such as MillerKnoll, Muuto and Herman, Barker Street also assists clients with interior planning on a project basis.
