Afrofurn began in 1980, designing hospital and laboratory furniture and equipment for international markets. Following the sale of much of this portfolio to a European consortium at the turn of the century, we focused on expanding our furniture, lighting, and décor offerings. While the designs were initially inspired by global trends, Afrofurn now integrates African cultural motifs, patterns, and design principles tailored to regional preferences. Despite the fully automated manufacturing processes, the assembly requires deft human craftsmanship, where African artistry and precision shine through. This blend of advanced techniques and traditional craftsmanship reflects the brand’s African roots and heritage.

How do you select the materials for your products, and what role does sustainability play in your design and manufacturing processes?

All our materials are sourced and manufactured locally, emphasising sustainability and environmental stewardship. Aluminum, our primary material, is produced through environmentally controlled processes, ensuring minimal impact on ecosystems. We also prioritise the use of durable, recyclable materials. Our commitment to sustainability is deeply tied to African values of resourcefulness and respect for nature. By focusing on local sourcing, we support community livelihoods while reducing our carbon footprint. Additionally, skills development remains central to our operations, fostering empowerment and creating opportunities for artisans.

Can you describe the design philosophy behind Afrofurn’s pieces? How do you balance modern aesthetics with traditional African craftsmanship?

Afrofurn’s design philosophy blends quality, flowing aesthetics, and durability with a deep appreciation for African artistry. Over the past 30 years, we’ve developed a unique style that incorporates African craftsmanship’s tactile and symbolic elements into contemporary forms. However, there’s a prevailing global perception that African products are solely handcrafted and rustic. We had to overcome this by showcasing our expertise in creating high-quality, precision-engineered furniture that incorporates the essence of African craftsmanship. By ensuring consistent quality and celebrating African ingenuity in the assembly process, we’ve successfully demonstrated that African design is both innovative and globally competitive.

Afrofurn’s mechanically fastened products rely on the skills of artisans, particularly during the assembly stage. One of our most memorable projects was in 2010 when we designed furniture and lighting for a physician’s family home in India. The client’s request for “a unique design with silky finishes and subtle shadows” inspired us to innovate using laser-cut aluminum with an anodized finish. The resulting pieces reflected a modern aesthetic enriched by African design sensibilities. This project demonstrated how our commitment to quality and cultural depth can resonate with clients across the world, leaving a lasting impression.
