Spotlight: Basis Furniture

Meet Basis Furniture – a new start-up online furniture retailer, offering both classic and modern furniture designs to consumers and trade buyers alike.

Established in December of 2016, it’s run by brothers Ross & Kyle Wilson, and they’re aiming to provide great design and quality units but at highly-competitive prices, as a result of their no-retail, online sales model (serviced from their Diep River-based semi-industrial showroom and warehousing HQ).

Their refreshing catalogue covers dining, lounge, bedroom and outdoor-ware – including chairs, stools, tables and sofas. The style is contemporary, but classical. Palettes are mostly tonal and monochromatic, but with pops of trending pantones. They pair their contemporary and often Scandinavian-looking designs with well-balanced and contrasting materials; warm & fresh woods, industrial-feel metals as well as plush & hardy fabrics. Take a look at some of our favourites now in store: The range is imported from the Far East. With years of importing experience with their successful eventing sister company, Urbantonic, Basis leverages established, lasting and reliable supply chains, with the result being quality units, at a great price-point.

But arguably their greatest strength stems from the online model on which the business is built. By forgoing the need for expensive retail space, they can apply those cost-savings to offer a greater price-point on units that are better than their price tag suggests. It allows them to offer a well-sized, yet neat range of genuinely good-looking pieces. Importantly though, because of their independence and small scale, it allows them agility to pick up different designs and styles which the larger retailers sometimes aren’t bringing in, and at smaller quantities which means that you end up with a beautiful piece that is often unique and therefore not currently sitting in every other upper-middle class household across the land.

Basis has its’ warehouse and soon-to-be-completed showroom in Diep River (23 Estmil Road) and Ross & Kyle welcome anyone to come and ‘kick the tyres’. But if you want to check them out first before visiting, or you’re not based in Cape Town, check out the website. It is uncluttered, easy to navigate and showcases in high res all of their current stock, in various colourways so that you could even purchase without necessarily having to see it in person, and what’s more, affordable distribution can also be arranged, nationwide.
