An Exclusive with Essops: A Legacy of Innovation and Adaptation
As we sit down with Shazeaa Motala, Interior Designer, Home Decor Buyer and Merchandiser at Essops, we delve into the company’s remarkable journey as a pioneering home furnishings brand with over three decades of experience. From its humble beginnings as a family-run business to its current status as a nationwide brand with 16 stores across South Africa, Essops has consistently pushed the boundaries of product development, technological advancements, and creative approaches to stay ahead of the curve.
How has Essops evolved to maintain its status as an avant-garde brand?
Through the ever-changing way of the world, it is important to have the agility to adapt to change and to be innovative. To constantly push boundaries whether that be through product development, technological advancements or creative approaches. Staying ahead of trends and setting new ones helps to maintain a cutting-edge image. It is also important to stay focused on the consumer, to keep an eye on changing consumer needs and desires to stay relevant.
What have been some of the product milestones through Essops’ history that have shaped the company into what it is today?
Essops Home has a rich history as a family-run business with the most notable milestone being when the founder bought his partner out in 1996. The legacy continued and today the third generation has entered into the business.
Upon inception of Essops, most of the products were locally sourced. Today 80% of our products are imported from various parts of the world including China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Turkey, Italy and Malaysia.
Essops Home is now a nationwide brand with 16 stores around South Africa spanning across Gauteng, KZN, North West and Limpopo. These are just a few of the milestones that not only shape the company’s history but also contribute to its ongoing evolution.
What are some of the biggest challenges faced over the years?
Companies with long histories such as us, are often faced with significant challenges. Some of these include market shifts such as preference changes, new competitors emerging, and shifts in market demand that can pose a threat. However, this can be combated with continuous market research. Economic downturns are also a major threat to the business since most of our products are imported and the ever-changing fluctuations in the freight rates and exchange rates do pose a threat. However in the last couple of years, we have had to resort to sourcing more local products to combat this.
Essop’s mission is to offer affordability without compromising on quality or service; how does it balance this?
By optimizing the supply chain, from sourcing raw materials to distribution, we try to reduce costs without compromising on the quality. This often involves negotiating better terms with suppliers, bulk purchasing and building strong relationships with reliable suppliers by staying loyal to them. We also have to redesign products often to keep the costs low.
How does Essops differentiate itself from competitors in the industry?
We strive to do this in a range of ways including unique and trendy design aesthetics, quality craftsmanship, affordability without compromise, innovative product offerings, brand experience and competitive pricing and promotions.
What does the future of home decor and design look like for South Africa?
The future of home decor and design in South Africa is likely to be influenced by a combination of global trends and local culture which includes lots of textured fabrics, curves, modular and functional designs as well as minimalism.
Essops understands the quest to find the perfect home style, the need for convenience, and the importance of quality and value. The goal is to offer affordability without compromising on quality or service. The team is on hand to share knowledge and expertise to help you choose décor that reflects your unique personality.
