From Falling Apart to Flawless: Traviata Flooring at The Key School for Autism
Not every project begins with a clean substrate. Work by Derrington Floors at The Key School, a specialised school for children with autism in Parktown, Johannesburg, quickly moved beyond a straightforward re-floor. Investigation revealed a collapsed subfloor: joists sagging or rotted through, and in places the historic subfloor gone entirely, down to the rubble-stone foundations of the building. The project ultimately incorporated Traviata Flooring‘s Tru-Wood XL throughout the school.
In an occupied school, this genuine structural failure had to be resolved with urgency and care. This was done through a complete substrate rebuild, before Traviata’s Tru-Wood XL could be installed.
The Build-Up
- Removal and assessment of the failed timber subfloor.
- Rebuilding the subframe to re-establish a level, load-bearing base.
- Installing a DPC moisture barrier to protect the subfloor and product from moisture.
- Installing structural shutterply for a rigid, stable platform.
- Installing Tru-Wood XL in Dominican Oak throughout the classrooms and corridors, for a warm, durable, hardwood-look finish.
The result is bright, level, seamless flooring. This is a clear demonstration of what a correctly detailed build-up, paired with the right product, can achieve on a genuinely difficult site.
About Tru-Wood XL
In a high-traffic environment used daily by children, product selection carried as much weight as installation quality. Tru-Wood XL, with AtroGuard technology, is the next generation of water-resistant flooring. This combines the natural wood element and rigidity of laminate with the beauty of real hardwood. Subsequently, it can be installed up to 20m x 20m without expansion profiles. Furthermore, it is extra stable with SureCore Black HDF, offers 72hr water resistance with Double PowerSeal waxed edges, can be wet mopped, and carries an AC5 rating for extra wear and scratch resistance. Additionally, six beautiful hardwood décors are available.
About The Key School
Founded in 1975, The Key School is the oldest school of its kind in Johannesburg. It is a non-profit offering specialised educational and therapeutic support to children with autism and special needs aged 2 to 12. For a school built around routine, structure and sensory sensitivity, a safe, level and easy-to-maintain floor is therefore not a finishing touch. It is part of the therapeutic environment itself.
