Castro Wood Floors Brings Natural Warmth to Clube Paraíso Wellness Retreat in Portugal
There’s something lovely about walking barefoot across a beautiful wooden floor. The natural grain, warmth and texture underfoot bring a sense of comfort that’s difficult to replicate with other materials. And when that same material flows from inside to outside, it can create a wonderful connection between a building and the landscape around it.
At Clube Paraíso, a wellness retreat nestled in the natural surroundings of Guimarães, Portugal, wood plays an important role in bringing that connection to life. Designed as a place for relaxation and well-being, the project uses natural materials to create inviting spaces that feel closely connected to their surroundings.
For European flooring specialist Castro Wood Floors, the brief called for two different timber solutions: durable Iroko decking for the exterior areas and beautiful European Oak flooring throughout the interiors.
Outside, Iroko was chosen for its rich natural appearance and impressive durability. Known for its stability and resistance to humidity, temperature changes and prolonged exposure to the elements, this hardwood is particularly well suited to outdoor spaces in hospitality and wellness settings.
It also feels comfortable underfoot, making it a lovely choice for areas where guests move between indoor and outdoor spaces.
Inside, European Oak brings a softer, more refined character to the interiors. The flooring features generous 180 mm-wide planks, creating a sense of openness and continuity across rooms.
Rather than choosing perfectly uniform boards, the design celebrates the timber’s natural knots and grain variations. These small differences give each plank its own character, adding warmth and texture while maintaining a beautifully cohesive appearance.
Of course, in a busy hospitality environment, flooring needs to be practical as well as attractive. The oak is finished with an ultra-resistant lacquer designed for high-traffic areas, protecting it from everyday wear while preserving its natural beauty.
Together, the two timber selections create a consistent material story throughout Clube Paraíso, complementing the architecture and strengthening the connection between the interior spaces and surrounding landscape.
It’s an approach that reflects the growing appreciation for natural materials in wellness architecture, where the textures, colours and tactile qualities of wood can help create more comfortable and welcoming environments.
Castro Wood Floors specialises in premium timber flooring for residential, commercial and hospitality projects worldwide, with a collection that includes engineered and solid wood flooring alongside exterior decking solutions.
