One of the questions the team gets asked most frequently when it comes to choosing stone surfaces for a project is whether marble or granite would be best.
To help prospective clients choose the right surface for their needs, here the team explains the differences between the two stone surfaces.
Back to the beginning
When it comes to choosing between marble and granite, the first thing customers should understand is that the two types of stone are formed differently, which means there are natural differences between them when it comes to durability, appearance and porosity. Marble is a metamorphic rock, which is formed out of limestone or dolomite subject to extreme heat and pressure, while granite is an igneous rock formed deep below the surface when molten magma solidifies.
Durability
Because granite is naturally harder than marble, it is more durable, making it a better option for floors.
Porosity
Granite is also less porous than marble. That said, if treated correctly, marble will not absorb liquids or stain, making both a good option for kitchen counters and bathroom vanities.
Colour and veining
Natural stone is utterly unique with no two slabs being the same. This means that there’s an unlimited amount of patterning effects in both marble and granite. However, when it comes to colour, granite generally offers a wider variety of hues and speckled colours. On the other hand, marble offers more consistent colouring and veining.
Maintenance
Due to its higher porosity and its softer surface, marble is more prone to stains and scratches and requires more maintenance than granite. Both, however, are easy to clean.
Best for
Marble is best for wall cladding, shower walls, vanities, and other low-impact areas, while granite is a good option for countertops, tabletops, flooring, outdoor landscaping, and wall cladding.
