FloorworX invest in skills development for the Youth of South Africa

On June 16th, we recognise the role of youth in the liberation of South Africa. Youth are the back bone to the nation. They can change the future of the society with their energy, courageous behaviour and bright ideas.

Regrettably the youth unemployment rate in South Africa has increased by 1.6% since last year. About 58% of those unemployed this year were young people, aged between 15 and 24. The unemployment rate remained high among those with an education level lower than matric, currently at 33.1%, while the unemployment rate among graduates remained at 7.3%. Stanlib chief economist Kevin Lings said: “South Africa’s labour market has failed to gain any meaningful traction over the past year with the unemployment rate, especially for the youth, remaining exceedingly high by global standards.”

He said increasing employment has to be the number one economic, political and social objective. “It can only be resolved through a concerted and sustained effort to improve skills development, as well as encouraging private sector fixed-investment spending, business development and entrepreneurship. FloorworX regularly attends open days at various tertiary education facilities, in an effort to create awareness of the latest developments in flooring and to equip students for their role in South Africa’s rapidly growing building industry.

Further to that, FloorworX is a member of the Flooring Industry Training Association (FiTA). Manufacturer and distributor members can be described as importers or manufacturers of all types of soft and hard floor coverings including ceramics, specialised flooring, self levelling screed, glue, etc. These members operate in the construction, corporate, hospitality, retail and residential markets throughout South Africa, where they supply and install all types of floor coverings.

FloorworX is the only manufacturer in South Africa who produces semi-flexible vinyl tiles and fully-flexible vinyl sheeting & tiles. Apart from the fact that FloorworX is proudly and deeply rooted in our beautiful country, and thus has our economy’s welfare at heart, FloorworX also branches out internationally to bring South Africa the latest in flooring technology from abroad.

FloorworX distributes a comprehensive range of internationally renowned resilient floor coverings, wood laminates, luxury vinyl planks and engineered wooden floors. FloorworX offer installation training on all the products we manufacture and distribute. Training is available throughout the year at branches located in Steeledale, Cape Town and Kwazulu-Natal. Most floor layers start out by joining a company and training on the job. You’ll need the following set of skills:

  • practical skills
  • math skills to measure floor areas and work out costs
  • the ability to work quickly and accurately
  • customer service skills

The job is physically demanding and you’ll spend much of your time kneeling to fit flooring. You’ll also be lifting and carrying heavy flooring materials.

If this sounds like a career opportunity you would like to pursue, make contact with our Technical Manager, Roy Sinclair on rsinclair@floorworx.co.za to schedule your first training course or click here to download our 2017 Training schedule.
