In an era increasingly drawn to tactility, material honesty, and interiors with a sense of permanence, handmade surfaces are taking on renewed significance. At Africotta, this approach has shaped the brand’s philosophy for more than four decades, with every tile carrying not only texture and colour but also the visible imprint of craftsmanship itself.
Each tile begins with elemental materials: cement, sand, and natural earth pigments sourced from the African landscape. From there, the process remains deeply hands-on. Tiles are poured, pressed, and cured individually within the factory, allowing subtle shifts in tone, texture, and finish to emerge naturally through the making process. Rather than striving for industrial uniformity, these variations are embraced as part of the material’s character – evidence of something shaped by human touch rather than automated production.
This tactile quality becomes especially powerful once installed within a space. A charcoal splashback catches the changing morning light with softness and depth. Sandstone tones create warmth around a fireplace, while terracotta underfoot introduces a grounded, almost elemental atmosphere to an entrance hall. The surfaces do not simply decorate a room; they anchor it, introducing a lived-in quality that feels immediate and enduring.
The colour palette itself remains closely tied to the landscapes that inform the brand’s identity. Shades such as Limpopo, Molopo, African Ash, Senegal, and Tobacco reference soil, earth, and place, reinforcing a connection between architecture and environment. Because each design is available across the full colour spectrum, combinations remain highly individual, allowing interiors to develop their own layered material language.
This year, Africotta extends this philosophy with the introduction of a dedicated wall tile collection. Available in three handcrafted formats, including the elongated Klompie, a refined Subway tile, and a classic square profile, the new range translates the same textured warmth into more vertical architectural applications.
Produced from the brand’s centrally located South African factory and delivered nationwide, the collection continues the brand’s longstanding commitment to craftsmanship, material integrity, and spaces that feel timeless rather than trend-driven.
