Explore Luxury Living at Il Sereno Hotel Lake Como

The art of weaving, translated by Warli into hand-knotted rugs with sober and sophisticated appeal, is among the focuses of Patricia Urquiola’s project, Il Sereno Hotel / Lake Como.

Certain architectural and interior projects are more successful than others in representing Italian style as excellence in luxury hospitality. The landscape, aesthetic choices and execution are the elements that, if creatively orchestrated, ensure unforgettable holiday experiences. Warli is proud to be a partner to one of these very projects: Il Sereno Hotel on the shores of Lake Como, designed by Patricia Urquiola with hotelier Luis Contreras. The hotel’s recent expansion to include a brand-new penthouse suite concept in a newly-constructed building has garnered worldwide acclaim, reaffirming its status as a holder of the World’s Best Award by Travel + Leisure.

Warli rugs have been acknowledged for their ability to embody the project’s focus: a continuous and harmonious interface with the lake, the familiarity of using local materials, an iconic mix of bespoke and non-bespoke furnishings, either specially designed or chosen from partners like Warli who work around a common ideal of understatement, beauty and subtle elegance.

The preference for Warli also complements the mention afforded by Urquiola’s creativity to the art of weaving, especially silk, which is so historically rooted in the region.

Accessed using a separate lift, there are almost 150 square metres (1600 square feet) of living space, including a 30-square-metre terrace, plus an additional 50-square-metre grass garden around the perimeter.

The penthouse features a large living room, dining room, two bathrooms, master bedroom and can accommodate two guests. The incredible space is complemented by the spectacular view over the lake, from all rooms.

This is where the Warli rugs come in. For the bedrooms, the Barbès and Dots collections were selected, both designed by Paolo Zani. The Barbès feature a regular design in which the weft is randomly interrupted by the irregular colour of the bamboo silk and Indian women’s saree silk yarns, recycled from the textile industry and hand-knotted with Persian technique. The Dots rugs, on the other hand, have an entirely different texture. Made of hand-woven wool and tencel, they create a soft and continuous surface, finely worked with twisted wool elements and stippling in different shades, achieved by the special technique used to dye and twist the wools.

Barbès, design by Paolo Zani, is a hand-woven rug using the Persian technique, made of bamboo and recycled saree silk. The rich colours of Indian women’s silk sarees are reworked from industrial textile waste in a delightful blend of yarns and vibrant colours. Barbès is a regular design featuring a weft randomly interrupted by irregular colour.

Dots, design by Paolo Zani, is a hand-woven rug made of wool and tencel, featuring a soft and continuous surface, finely worked with twisted wool elements. The multicoloured stippling is achieved by the special technique used to dye and twist the wools.

Warli went on to accommodate the specific needs of the project with several custom rugs, all catering to the sense of uniqueness that projects for this target audience must convey in the living room. In this case, a “handloom” rug was selected, hand-woven on a loom, made of 50% New Zealand undyed “handspun” wool and 50% viscose. The edge is made of wool using a different technique.
