Your Guide to Maximalist Interior Design

We have all come to know minimalist design with the philosophy that less is more. Now, maximalism debunks the concept with a more is more approach to design. If you’re intrigued by the idea of going bigger and bolder in your design choices, then read on as we share more about this fascinating design idea…

In many ways, maximalist interior design is more than just going bold. More than a bold approach to the world of interior design, Maximalism is also a celebration of creativity. In fact, it is a creative way of designing that allows travel into fantasy and dreams. For some, this ‘out there’ design approach may seem a little overwhelming, but there are many ideas that can spark your own creative interpretations. And who knows, before you know it, you too could become an expert in the arena of Maximalism.

Here’s what you need to know…

In simple terms, we could say that Maximalist interior design represents the opposite of Minimalism. But this definition is far too simple. With an expressive style like Maximalism, the trend is more complex and can incorporate so many different ideas to inform and shape space. From bold colours and textures to rooms filled with pattern on pattern. The design possibilities are endless.

Maximalism can sometimes be misunderstood, however, there is a reason why this happens. There is no label definition for this style, so to truly understand it, we need to explore its core elements, which reveal abundant patterns, colours, and textures.

Another key to this style – and what makes it so fun – is that there are no rules for Maximalism. Here, anything goes. This style is thus very unique and is not limited by perception alone.

Top designers offer some input…

In an interview with Vogue, designer Keren Richter explains: “Maximalism is the art of more-is-more; layered patterning, highly saturated colours, ample accessories and art (likely hung “salon-style”), and a real sense of playfulness and bold gestures”.

It’s about choosing the big options – the ones that spark fantasy and imagination in a big way. It’s also about saying no to ‘less’ and opting for a larger than life approach to design.

How can you design a Maximalist interior?

Here are some tips, courtesy of Schnabel: “Maximalist spaces can be successful when a cohesive look is created by tying many different patterns and textures together with a consistent colour or colour family. The colour (s) of choice can be added on the walls, ceiling, window jambs and millwork—even the furniture upholstery and window treatments,” she explains.

“To ground the eye, consistent hard finishes like wood or marble coffee and side tables should provide relief to the room’s bold patterns and colours. All in all, to be a maximalist, ensure as many spots in the room as possible aren’t left naked.”

A maximalist interior incorporates the following:

Bold Patterns:

Maximalist interior design invests in bold patterns. This can be used to adorn walls with beautiful patterned wallpapers, on the floor in stunning rugs, and in whatever the imagination leads.

Rich Colours

Maximalism is rich and bold colours. Expressive tones are a must with bright colours like rich red, yellow, green and orange. These deep punchy colours lure us into a creative and expressive space.

Graphic Prints and Artwork

Two items that can’t be missing in a maximalist interior are graphic prints and artwork. This gives a room depth and intrigue and captures the imaginative in a fun and interesting way.

Layering

Layering colours, textures and furnishings is key to a great maximalist interior. Consider bold choices that flow into your furniture, artworks, and everything your imagination allows, creating a stunning layout.

Combining Styles

It’s an opportunity to blend the styles that you most like – from Memphis to Art Deco; you can choose the styles that better match your personality and combine them to create your dream space.
