Tonic Design: Future Classics

A stalwart of South African design, Tonic Design is well-known for its unorthodox use of materials, its emphasis on technical precision and a return to traditional techniques and craftsmanship that makes their work contemporary, collectable future classics.

With showrooms in Johannesburg and Cape Town, the interior-architectural studio specialises in the design of iconic furniture and interiors that are undeniably current, enduringly classic and instantly liveable. This includes award-winning pieces such as HG Cabinet, Miss Daybed and Hawker Bench and celebrated spaces, including the Yswara showroom, which celebrates the luxury South African tea brand’s cultural roots, and the Spitz flagship store in Sandton, which is currently underway.

Tonic is also well-known for its exceptional residential designs. Two stellar recent projects include a home in Illovo, a compact cluster designed for a young professional couple who wanted a sophisticated home with a playful edge. This the studio interpreted as a fresh canvas to which was added vibrant art, rugs and contemporary furniture pieces.

Another exciting project is a complete remodel of a Lonehill property. “The clients loved the position of the existing home and chose to remodel rather than relocate. We worked closely with BD Studio Architects to update the home for a more contemporary feel,” explains Tonic.

Warm wood and a muted palette of greys, black and navy blues create a modern space accentuated with modern art and objects for a decidedly sophisticated take on contemporary elegance.

In addition to its collections, Tonic Design is also a distributor for Gubi, Classicon, Jieldé, Ercol and Andreu World.
