The Inspiring Journey of GLE interiors
A deep-seated passion for aesthetics led to the creation of GLE Interiors. Today we hear from the founder of this incredible brand – sharing the pivotal moments, inspirations, and vision that shaped the brand’s evolution.
What inspired you to venture into the world of interior design, and what have been some key moments along the way that shaped the brand?
My journey to founding GLE Interiors has been both transformative and enriching. Having spent 16 years in the financial services sector, I found myself increasingly drawn to the aesthetic beauty of spaces and architecture. Friends would often compliment my home and encourage me to take on decorating projects for them. This organic transition into interior design felt like a natural evolution, igniting a passion that had long been simmering beneath the surface.
What has significantly shaped my brand is my commitment to continuous self-development and professional growth. I recognised early on that to elevate my approach to interior design, I needed to surround myself with a talented team. By hiring qualified interior designers and architects, we have been able to cultivate a professional environment that enhances our creative output. Together, we strive to provide innovative solutions that resonate with our clients’ visions and needs.
Where did your love and passion for Interior Design originate from?
Was there a particular experience, place, or person that ignited your interest in interior design and its role in interior design?
My passion for interior design can be traced back to influential figures in my life, particularly my aunt Thandi. Her impeccable taste in fashion, art, and décor left a lasting impression on me. I spent countless hours in her home, captivated by her talent for blending unique furniture and textures. Her enthusiasm for design was infectious, and I vividly remember eagerly anticipating my monthly tradition of reading the latest issue of South African Homeowner magazine after she had browsed through it. These experiences planted the seeds of my interest in how interior spaces can reflect personality and foster emotional connections.
GLE Interiors is known for its innovative projects. How do you stay inspired and keep your interior design offerings fresh and exciting season after season? Do you follow any specific design trends, or do you prefer to set your own?
At GLE Interiors, we understand that staying inspired is crucial to our creative process. Our Research Nook serves as a sanctuary for design literature, including magazines, books, and precedent studies that keep us in tune with current trends. However, rather than simply following trends, we prioritise our clients’ briefs as the guiding force behind our projects. We believe that interior design should harmonise function, balance, and intrigue. Our mission is to set our own trends, crafting spaces that resonate with individuality and reflect the unique stories of our clients.
Creative inspiration is key in design. Are there particular methods, sources, or places that you turn to for inspiration? How do you incorporate your surroundings or cultural influences into your collections?
Our surroundings play a vital role in shaping our design philosophy. South Africa, with its rich history and vibrant contemporary art scene, provides a wellspring of inspiration. From the grandeur of old Rand Lord mansions in Westcliff and Parktown to the striking Keiskamma tapestries, the diversity of our environment fuels our creativity. We actively seek to incorporate these cultural influences into our collections, ensuring that our designs not only capture aesthetics but also tell a compelling story rooted in our heritage.
Every brand has its milestones. Tell us about some of your proudest moments.
Throughout my career, there have been several milestones that stand out. One of our proudest moments was being selected to design the Belgotex stand for Design Joburg 2022. This opportunity not only affirmed GLE’s position as a newcomer in the industry but also allowed us to showcase our design philosophy on a prominent platform. Each project completed and recognition received propels us forward, motivating us to push the boundaries of creativity.
The latest projects always capture attention. Can you tell us a bit about your recent projects? What’s been the response from your customers and the design community?
Currently, we are finalising a project in Zambia, marking our inaugural venture into that market. This urban contemporary house, set for handover in March, has been an exciting challenge for our team. Additionally, a standout project at Waterfall Country Estate, designed by SG Studio SA, has received enthusiastic feedback from our clients. The house’s architectural design celebrates curves while harmonising with bold geometrical forms. We pride ourselves on maintaining strong relationships with our clients, ensuring their satisfaction and fostering a collaborative spirit that lasts beyond project completion.
Looking ahead to the future. What do you see on the horizon for the South African interior and design industries this year? Any trends or shifts that you’re particularly excited about or think will define 2025?
Looking ahead to 2025, I see a vibrant future for the South African interior design industry. While I don’t strictly adhere to trends, I sense a growing inclination towards whimsical designs that embrace bold contrasts. As our contemporary design aesthetic gains recognition, I anticipate a fusion of country freshness with exotic prints and foliage wallpapers. This unique blend will not only define our local scene but also intrigue the global audience, showcasing the rich tapestry of South African culture and creativity in interior design.
