Sasha Bikoff: Step Into A World of Maximalist Interiors
One of the year’s biggest – and quite literally boldest – interior-design trends, maximalist interiors are having a moment.
Championing vibrant hues, eclectic patterns and playful decor with a decidedly more-is-more approach, homeowners and decorators are embracing the characterful approach to decorating.
And few do it better than Sasha Bikoff.
The designer had just six weeks to merge her client’s desires with her unique artistic flair. The goal? To transform the existing house with its modern finishes into a vibrant, colourful environment.
In addition, the brief stipulated comfortable, functional pieces over purely aesthetic choices and the use of non-toxic materials. The clients, both historians, also wanted historical elements woven into the design.
The result is a modern home filled with various colours and monochromatic accents. It also showcases intricate layers of patterns and textures, with nods to Marrakech throughout the expansive Brooklyn Heights brownstone. This includes several “colour-blocked” rooms. An emerald green room is designated as the den and a blue room functions as a stylishly curated sitting room. In addition, you’ll find a hot-pink dressing room for the owner, showcasing her distinct personality and flair.
Both spaces are filled with unique antiques. This includes an antique patterned rug sourced from Bokara Rugs in the den and a striking Italian Alberto Donà Murano glass Poliedri chandelier from around 1985 in the sitting room.
Elsewhere you’ll find counter stools from Design Frères upholstered in a vibrant Schumacher patchwork chintz fabric (kitchen). There is also a Murano glass chandelier evoking an Italian grotto and captivating House of Hackney wallpaper (dining room), and a striking pink-hued Gucci wallpaper (guest WC). This “captures the essence of modern maximalism and exotic Moroccan influences, making every corner a visual delight”, says the designer.
