Casa Grande – the ultimate Mexican modernist party house
It’s no surprise that what started as an idea over a glass of wine soon turned into a creative endeavour aimed at celebrating friendship, adventure and good times.
Today, the creative collaboration between architect Víctor Legorreta and interior designer Ken Fulk is better known as Casa Grande, or to those in the know, the ultimate Mexican party house.
The modernist property, designed by Legorreta, seamlessly blends the architect’s love of bold geometrical forms and vibrant colours – a nod to his vibrant Mexican culture – with his smart, sensitive use of natural light and space.
Fulk filled the modernist marvel with even more colour and fun – injecting a bubbly vivaciousness into the interiors through his use of rich textures, opulent furnishings and unexpected details that capture the spirit of the celebrations the house is known for.
Guests enter the home – or party – through a modernist entryway painted hot pink – a Legorreta signature – before stepping into a central courtyard with its swimming pool from which the rest of the home radiates.
Inside, stone and whitewashed wide-plank floors, neutral walls and hand-scraped light-wood doors and shutters set the scene for a well-curated party of colour and pattern, that just like guests at a stylish soiree, blend together, despite their differences, to make a pleasing whole. For here lime-green monkey tiles in a bathroom somehow works perfectly well with a zig-zag black-and-white kitchen wall and a bright-pink seating area. Elsewhere bubblegum-pink tiles in another bathroom are offset by gold Baroque-style mirrors and a black vanity.
Colourful, quirky and fun, Casa Grande certainly is a grand celebration of all the good times in life.
