Meet Sipho Phiri, Managing Director at GLE Interiors
Meet Sipho Phiri, the man behind the brand at ‘Great Lifestyle Experience’ GLE Interiors, who embarked on a journey from finance to interior design, driven by his passion for art, décor, and architecture. Sipho effortlessly blends his financial expertise with his artistic talents to create transformative spaces.
Tell us about your journey in founding GLE Interiors.
I hold a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Accounting and spent 16 years in the Financial Services industry. During this time, I founded GLE Interiors as a response to my passion for art, décor, and architecture. Initially a part-time venture, GLE Interiors grew significantly, prompting me to transition running it full-time in 2019. Since then, I have fully committed myself to this path. To further my expertise, I obtained a Higher Certificate in Architectural Technology from AIE Greenside Academy and am currently pursuing a National Diploma in Architecture. My goal is to become an Interior Architect with a deeper understanding of Architecture.
Where did your love and passion for design begin?
My passion for design has been a lifelong journey, rooted in my early artistic talents in drawing and painting. As a child, I aspired to be a fashion designer; however, my parents encouraged me to pursue a more commercial career, leading me to study Accounting and Business Economics. I do not regret this path, as it ignited my entrepreneurial spirit and equipped me with valuable skills. Throughout my career in finance, I have consistently viewed myself as a designer, creatively approaching complex financial solutions. My previous boss often recognised this ability, remarking, “Call in Sipho, he thinks in colour.” I continue to nurture my artistic talents, having received numerous awards for my work in art, and I still actively paint and draw.
How do you stay inspired and keep your designs fresh and innovative? Are there specific methods or sources you rely on for creative inspiration?
I believe that interior design is a multifaceted discipline, influenced by various aspects of culture and lifestyle. I draw inspiration from contemporary South African artists, whose bold and fresh perspectives ignite my creativity. Additionally, I enjoy collecting old architectural books from second-hand bookshops and exploring diverse environments through my travels, which further enrich my design outlook. Fashion and cuisine also serve as significant sources of inspiration, allowing me to incorporate a wide range of influences into my work.
Your philosophy is to achieve a harmonious balance between form and function; please tell us the importance of this.
As an architectural scholar, I have learned that every space must fulfil a specific function. My technical training introduced me to the concept of “form,” which refers to the character of a building or space. Achieving a harmonious balance between form and function is essential, it involves creating spaces that not only serve their intended purpose but also evoke a sense of awe and contentment. When form and function coexist harmoniously, the result transcends mere utility, enriching the experience of those who inhabit the space.
You’ve done spectacular projects with various clients across the continent. How do you decide which projects to take on?
Every client is important to us, and our decision to take on projects is guided by the client’s vision for their space. We prioritise projects that aim to achieve more than just aesthetic appeal, they must also challenge us to enhance the client’s quality of life. By focusing on the deeper impact of our designs, we ensure that each project aligns with our commitment to creating meaningful and transformative spaces.
What do you think the South African interior and design industries have in store for the future?
The South African interior design industry is emerging as a prominent force, gaining recognition both on the African continent and internationally. Designers like Stephen Falcke and Kelly Hoppen are leading the way, showcasing our talent on global platforms. Recently, during our recruitment drive for interior designers, we observed that many locally qualified interior design professionals are securing positions with top architectural firms worldwide. This trend positions South Africa as a notable destination for interior design.
Our growing presence in the international market is a testament to the remarkable creativity and innovation within our industry. I am confident that this trajectory will continue, offering immense opportunities for growth and inspiring new levels of design excellence that the world will appreciate for years to come.
