Architectural Alchemy: Spotlight on Bomax Architects

In the diverse architecture landscape, the ultimate uniform design objective is to blend form, function, and aesthetics – creating spaces that are more than the sum of their parts. In our exclusive Q&A session with the directors of Bomax Architects, Josh Brodie, and Dion Walters, we delve into what fuels their creative fire and we explore the inspiring projects they’ve been working on. Join us as we unlock the secrets to their architectural alchemy.

JB: I enjoy the sensory feeling that spaces can create and the transition and flow between spaces.

DW: It feels great to create beautiful architecture. The designs are often challenging puzzles that require both deep thought and artistic expression; a pure solution evokes a rewarding emotive response.

You are known for your minimalist spaces – what draws you to create this look with such pizzazz and confidence?

JB: The tranquillity that minimalist spaces create…

DW: When unnecessary objects from a design solution are removed, the impression becomes clearer and improved. Some decorative items remain essential to a design, and those should stay. Our confidence comes from understanding this simple rule of what can be removed. When implemented with care, the result is a more aesthetic design that we prefer, which has become our architectural direction.

What architectural project that you have created has left you with a lasting impact?

JB: House Llandudno. Recently awarded Design & Concrete Category Winner in the LOOP Design Awards 2023.)

DW: Thorn Street, Upper Fernwood Estate, Newlands – our first off-shutter concrete house created in 2009 still looks current today.

Which architectural movements have influenced your architectural style?

JB: I draw inspiration from the Bauhaus and Modern architectural styles.

DW: The Modern Architecture Movement influenced the current International Style of Architecture. We want that simplicity, but only with expression and flair.

What is your personal style preference?

JB: Minimalism

DW: Contemporary Modernism

What have been your career highlights?

JB: Those moments of landing new projects with good architectural briefs

DW: I remember sitting back in a building on opening night while having a drink with a happy client.

What do you define as ultimate luxury?

JB: All aspects of comfortability and useability need to be seamlessly integrated and hidden.

DW: Pure beauty – one crafted and coordinated solution from form through to material selection and textures.

Tell us more about your latest projects (the brief and style).

JB: Our latest projects have adopted a more earthy and natural style of finishes; however, they are still within the minimalist design and detailing technology. Many of our recent projects have been seafront villas, and these raw and natural materials lend themselves to better longevity within the harsh coastal environment.

DW: We have some exciting new projects running; they inevitably have our architecture style only with different interpretations due to varied site conditions and client briefs. They include unique ‘Contemporary Mediterranean’ and ‘Sculptured Minimalism’ styles.
