Where Innovation Meets Expression: A New Era of Luxury Coatings
South Africa’s biggest paint brand has aligned with a bold new partner. Plascon, with its decades of manufacturing muscle and national reach, has entered a joint venture with Versus Paint Specialists, a boutique luxury coatings house known for finishes that architects and developers request by name.
If this collaboration were a single colour or finish, what would it be, and why does it capture the essence of what you are building together?
Warm sandstone at golden hour. That precise moment when Highveld light hits a wall and you are not sure whether it is the surface or the sun doing the work. It is rich without being loud. Textured without being fussy. It belongs here, in this climate, in this light, in spaces shaped around how South Africans actually live. That is what this partnership feels like. Two brands that understand the best finish is not the one that shouts, but the one that makes the whole room feel right.
Versus is rooted in creativity and expression, while Plascon shapes the spaces we live in. How do you translate artistic vision into something people can live with every day?
You stop treating them as separate things. A finish that looks beautiful but chips in eighteen months is not luxury, it is disappointment. Versus coatings were built for longevity from day one. Iron oxide pigments that stand up to the African sun. Low-VOC formulas trusted in hospitals, hotels and homes where performance is non-negotiable. The artistry was always there. Now, with Plascon behind us, the reach is there too.
What is the boldest or most unexpected idea that came up during this collaboration, and did it make it into the final product?
That this partnership happened at all. On paper, it is an unlikely pairing: a boutique luxury coatings specialist and South Africa’s biggest paint brand choosing to build something together. But that is precisely what makes it compelling. This was never about dissolving identities or smoothing out differences. It was about recognising complementary strengths and understanding that scale and artistry do not have to exist in opposition. That idea made it into the final product from the start. What emerges from here is what makes the story worth following.
Paint is not just visual; it sets mood and emotion. What feeling do you want people to experience when they interact with what you have created together?
That feeling when you walk into a space and something simply works. You cannot immediately explain it, but you do not want to leave. That is what a great finish does. It does not announce itself. It quietly makes everything else in the room feel more intentional. That is the standard we are holding ourselves to.
If budget, materials and practicality did not matter, what is the dream project you would create together?
A game lodge where the architecture disappears into the landscape. Walls textured like dry riverbeds. Finishes that shift from clay-warm in the afternoon to almost silver under a full moon. Surfaces that feel as though they were always there, as if the building did not interrupt the bush but became part of it. South Africa has some of the most extraordinary settings on earth. The dream is to create finishes worthy of them.
