Dark Romance Interiors with Medal Paints

Oxblood, aubergine and charcoal are having a moment. Here’s how to wear them well, in a country that knows a thing or two about dramatic skies.

Halloween isn’t a South African tradition, but the mood behind it fits us surprisingly well. This October, while the jacarandas in Joburg and Pretoria flood the streets with violet, the most interesting interiors are going dark. The look is rich, velvety and a little mysterious: Dark Romance. With Medal Paints, Dark Romance interiors become an opportunity to explore rich colours and sophisticated finishes.

It’s Halloween, but make it chic. There are no cobwebs or plastic pumpkins here, only deep, saturated colour, glowing light and a few good textures.

The palette: colour with depth

Dark Romance starts with four shades, each with its own South African cousin.

  • Oxblood is the deep red of a Stellenbosch Cabernet held up to candlelight. It’s warm and enveloping, and it suits studies, dining rooms and a statement wall behind the bed.
  • Aubergine is a purple so deep it’s nearly black, like a Highveld storm rolling in over the horizon. It pairs beautifully with brass and bronze.
  • Charcoal is the volcanic-rock grey of a Karoo koppie at dusk. It’s the quiet anchor that lets the richer colours sing.
  • Black is the Karoo sky on a moonless night. Used with care, on a door, a ceiling or a fireplace surround, it adds instant sophistication.

Don’t fear the dark

A common mistake is assuming dark colour makes a room feel smaller. Done properly, it does the opposite. Deep walls blur the edges of a room, so it feels intimate and enveloping rather than boxed in. Our high ceilings and generous proportions, in older Parkview homes and contemporary Sandton builds alike, can carry bold colour beautifully.

Three tips will help you get it right:

  1. Commit to the room. Painting the walls, skirtings and even the ceiling in one colour (a technique known as colour drenching) creates a seamless, luxurious cocoon.
  2. Play with sheen. Pair a matte wall finish with a subtle sheen on woodwork or doors. The contrast catches light and adds quiet drama.
  3. Test in your own light. South African light is strong and golden, and it changes a dark colour dramatically from morning to evening. Test large swatches on more than one wall and look at them at different times of day.

Layer in the atmosphere

Paint sets the stage, but Dark Romance is completed by what you put in front of it:

  • Smoky glass: amber- and grey-tinted vases, carafes and mirrors that reflect light softly.
  • Sculptural candles: tapered, twisted or cluster candles in varying heights. South Africans have had plenty of practice at candlelit evenings, so now it’s by design rather than necessity.
  • Velvet: a deep-toned sofa, scatter cushions or curtains that pull in the paint colour and add tactile richness.
  • Dramatic lighting: low lamps, wall washers and warm bulbs. Skip the harsh overhead light and choose pools of glow instead.

Finish with a few natural touches, such as dried proteas, local ceramics or a piece of Africa-inspired art. They keep the look rooted here rather than imported.

Where to begin

You don’t need to repaint the whole house. Start with a single room, or even a single feature: an oxblood front door, an aubergine headboard wall, a charcoal built-in bookshelf. Light a candle, pour something red, and see how the room changes.

Dark Romance isn’t about being gloomy. It’s about warmth, depth and a little mystery, and it’s an invitation to turn your home into somewhere you’ll want to stay in all season.

The finish: Panache Supreme Vinyl Silk

Deep colour is only half of the Dark Romance story. The finish decides how it feels, and this is where Medal Paints’ Panache Supreme Vinyl Silk comes in. Its soft, elegant sheen catches lamplight and candle glow, adding depth and quiet luxury to oxblood, aubergine and charcoal that a flat finish can’t match, without the glare of a high gloss.

Elegance also has to perform. Dark walls show every mark, and the rooms that suit this look are the ones we actually live in: dining rooms, studies, bedrooms and busy passages. Panache Supreme Vinyl Silk gives you a smooth, durable surface that can be wiped clean, so the drama stays flawless long after the candles are blown out.

Choose your shade, apply it in Panache Supreme Vinyl Silk across a colour-drenched room or a single feature wall, and let the sheen do the rest.
