Shut the front door!

Add curb appeal and wipe down the front door. Your front door has endured a long, hard winter and may be dusty, and down-right dirty. Take some time to wash it down with soapy water and restore a fresh new look to the entrance of your home. While you’re at it, don’t forget the back door too and any other exterior doors you may have leading inside.

Keep the dirt out

While we’re at the front door, why not invest in two dirt-trapping mats – one that you can place on the outside of the door and one you can place inside. This means double duty when it comes to wiping feet and keeping the dirt where it belongs – out of your precious abode!

Knobs and handles

Remember to clean all the doorknobs and cabinet handles around the house. These are often breeding grounds for dirt and bacteria. As a Covid-19 prevention tip, be sure to wipe down all exterior handles and doorknobs with soapy water or a 70% (or more) alcohol solution often to ensure that you kill any potential disease-carrying germs. Do this daily if you have people over, or if you’ve been out and around others.

Grocery clean up

Who would have thought that in 2020, we would all be a little manic about cleaning our groceries before we unpack them in our homes. This important step could mean that you kill all germs before they go lurking in your kitchen. Create a soapy solution and wipe down all your groceries the moment you arrive from the shops. Be sure to wash off your reusable grocery bags too. Top tip: Try to place your filled grocery bags in one spot before you clean them, to eliminate the spread of germs before you actually get to wipe them down.

Counters

Whether in the bathroom or kitchen, be sure to spring clean your countertops and take careful consideration of the materials. Here are some ways to keep your counters clean…

  • Wood. Clean wood counters with a nonabrasive cleaner or a homemade mix of warm water with a splash of distilled white vinegar. Butcher-block and solid-wood counters should also be sealed for protection since they are susceptible to warping and cracking.
  • Granite and Marble: We love these finishes in the kitchen and bathroom as they are hardwearing and extremely durable. For stains on granite or marble countertops, clean with a paste of baking soda and water. You will also need to reseal these finishes often for added protection. Reseal granite once a year and marble every few months.
  • Quartz and Engineered Stone: Quartz countertops are mostly stain-resistant, but if you do come across a persistent mark that soap and water can’t handle, use a glass cleaner and a nonabrasive sponge.

The Fridge

Start your Spring Clean by unpacking your fridge completely and removing all drawers and storage containers. Wash these with soapy water and be sure to wipe down the entire interior of your fridge before repacking. While you’re at it. remember to wipe down the exterior of your fridge too, and especially the top which may have been neglected through winter.

The Freezer

Whether you have a frost-free freezer or not, be sure to do a regular clean and wipe out all the surfaces from icy build up. Take this time to declutter and reorganize the freezer. Toss any old, expired goods and make space for the Spring months ahead.

Clean your Drains

Your drains can easily become blocked up and grimy. If not cleaned often, they could even give off a stinky odour or not drain as easily as they should. You can purchase a regular household drain cleaner and follow the directions or make your own cleaner. Here’s what you need to do it yourself… Clear the area around your sink and put a 1/2 cup of baking soda down the drain. Follow that with a 1/2 cup of vinegar. Now plug your drain and let it sit for an hour. Then, unplug the drain and pour a pot of boiling water down it.

Spring Clean Your Upholstery and Furniture

To maintain your furniture, you should vacuum it regularly to remove dust. For obvious stains, wipe down with a wet or soapy solution (be sure to follow manufacturers’ guidelines for cleaning). You can also remove all couch covers and wash them or have them professionally cleaned for peace of mind.

Spring Clean The Ceilings

We seldom give our ceilings a second thought, but we should put them on our Spring Cleaning list. Start with a good dust – you may need an extendable option to reach corners and around light fittings. For any marks or stains, try wiping these down with a soapy solution.

Remember to invest in quality cleaning supplies and appliances to make life that much easier at home. Things like dusters, micro-fibre cloths, scrubbing brushes etc should be staples in your home. Also, be sure to invest in a good quality vacuum cleaner that will help you create a safer, cleaner environment for the whole family. You can shop some of our favourites at Numatic.
