Cosy Interiors: Appeal To Your Senses

Let us explore how to create a cosy interior this autumn by engaging your five senses: sight, sound, smell, touch and taste.

Creating a home that has an inviting, warm atmosphere is key to a cosy interior. By using the aids below from Hooga Homes, you can turn any home space into a cosy space this autumn.  Your home is a sanctuary that you share with your loved ones, setting up a positive, comforting atmosphere will benefit everyone.

Hygge pronounced Hooga is a Danish concept – ‘a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being’

Engage the Senses

Sight is what you see, so visible home decor and furniture.

Place your blankets and throws over the couches or hang them on the back of chairs so they are visible. On your hard surfaces, place something soft like table runners or fabric placemats. Layer your home, just like we do with our clothes in winter. If you have a fireplace, pack the wood visible to see. Bring the outdoors indoors by adding plants, natural fiber rugs and baskets.

Sound is atmospheric. When you have guests or in your normal morning routine, good music is great! If you are blessed with instruments and the ability to use them, put them out on display, this will add to the cosiness as we are inclined to sit around a musician to enjoy the music.

Smell. Picture this; a sterile white kitchen would appear cold to you but if you entered the kitchen and it smelt like freshly baked cookies, your whole perception of the space would change. Scented candles and incense are a must this autumn with aromas like ripe berry & dark chocolate, cinnamon & pear and sandalwood. Candles are like mini fires so we automatically feel the visual warmth from a candle.

Touch is associated with soft furnishings, scatters, blankets and carpets. For me texture is more important than pattern, the way things feel under hand. When choosing your scatters, focus on the fabrics and how they feel. Suede, leather, cotton, hemp and silk are a few wonderful textures to mix in your home. As you layer, stay in one colour palette and use various shades to avoid a cluttered look.

Taste. An autumn basket of oranges, apples and lemons on the table can bring such warmth with its colours and the citrus is perfect for the colder days. Walnuts with a nutcracker adds a great look and again brings people together.

‘Feel your home’ and create the atmosphere you want by appealing to your senses.
