Tom Dixon: 24 Hours in Shanghai

After opening 3 new shops, Tom Dixon returned to China with a ‘24 Hours in Shanghai’ event. The British design brand hosted a series of activities to coincide with Design Shanghai, the biggest design fair in Asia.

Entitled ‘DIXONARY’ – a nod to Tom’s eponymous book soon to be published in Mandarin, the event celebrated the brand’s past, present and future. Tom made an appearance in Shanghai… as a hologram. This event was the fifth stop on the global ‘24 Hours’ tour. It follows campaigns in Paris (January ‘20), Copenhagen (September ‘20), Stockholm (February ‘21) and Milan (April ‘21).

Artist Paul Hsu, co-founder of the extraordinary Shanghai-based Creative Studio MHPD was commissioned by Tom Dixon to hack 2 Fat Lounge chairs.

Tom says: ‘We met Paul through a mutual friend last time we were in China because we were wanting to not just engage in the commercial and design world, but also in the cultural life of this vibrant city. Paul reminded me of how FUN design and making can be, and we decided then (2 years ago) that we would do something together.’

Furthermore, Tom had a conversation with Lyndon Neri, renowned architect and founding partner of leading inter-disciplinary architectural design practice Neri & Hu. They discussed design and sustainability in Shanghai followed by a product presentation.

Live from the brand’s London HQ, the Coal Office, Tom played a set with friends and Swedish Synthesizer company Teenage Engineering, musician Rosey Chan and percussionist Beibei Wang, using a BEAT light drumkit.
