Spotlight: Amelia Mariella Interiors

Artist and designer Amelia Audinwood shares a passion for creating beautiful living spaces. As the owner of Amelia Mariella Interiors, she brings with her a wealth of knowledge and creative prowess in designing bespoke fabrics, furniture and art. Let’s find out more…

Describe your outlook on design.

My passion and outlook in creating beautiful living spaces for clients are born from my global travels across Africa, Australasia, Asia and Europe. As a native of Zimbabwe and a resident in some of the world’s most stunning cities – including Sydney, London, Oxford and now Cape Town – my travels and experiences have coloured my perspective and outlook in all aspects of my work.

How long has your brand been in business and what has been your key offerings?

Amelia Mariella has been operating in Cape Town for the last 15 years decorating many homes in Cape Town, doctors rooms and the Wynberg Military hospital, which was a 7-year project, designing the interiors, the fabric for the hospital curtains, blinds and the Paediatrics wards.

You also have your own range. Can you tell us more?

I design my own range of vibrant, hand-woven fabrics, source beautiful furniture and create my own art. My ultimate focus is to make sure that the client is happy with the end result and that the space works well. A home needs to have warmth, soul and personality.

What personally inspires you in your working life?

I am inspired daily by nature and the incredible colours that nature shows us.

What are some considerations when designing products?

All of my products are inspired by my paintings. The decision on what products to design depends on many things, the market, the season, and the fashion trends.

Planning a new product can sometimes be a nightmare. Can you tell us some of the common struggles?

The common struggles of planning a new product are quality control, advertising on the right platforms and making sure the price is competitive

What is your current favourite product?

My current favourites are my slippers, which are made from leftover fabrics from my own range of fabrics and recycling them into something which is stylish, comfortable and beautiful.

Any exciting projects or collaborations you are involved in?

The project which I found the most exciting was working for the hospital. Colour, space and design plays such an important role in the healing process.

Which designer inspires you?

Tricia Guild who is a designer in London has an incredible eye for colour, style and aesthetics. She inspires me immensely. Her spaces feel eclectic without being cluttered through the use of her amazing ability with colour.

The perfect place in your home to indulge?

The perfect place in my home to indulge is the veranda where I can be part of the garden and relax with a good book and be in the sunshine.

I know very few of us are travelling right now but if you could where would you go?

I would love to go to Morocco and be inspired by the historical buildings, interiors, craftsmanship and of course colour.

What are your current favourite restaurants/shops?

I am in love with the Utopia restaurant. The views are the best in Cape Town and the food is sublime.
