Silk By Design: Understanding The Symbolism of Orchids

Orchids are beautiful, intricate plants with detailed florals that bring a sense of grace and distinction to any room in which they are placed. When it comes to the symbolic meaning behind the humble orchid, we see that this beautiful flowering plant symbolises love, luxury, beauty and strength which dates back to ancient Greece.

It’s not hard to see why these plants are a symbol of strength and beauty. Their blooms are complex and exquisite. In fact, they often appear flawless. As such, they are commonly viewed as the perfect flower because of their varied and elegant blooms. The orchid is also connected to love and partnership. Why? Because they represent a graceful and charming partner. In ancient Greece, they were also a symbol of fertility, related to the shapes of the flower (female) and the bulb (male).

In many instances, orchids also represent patience. Growing and cultivating orchids can be challenging. They require a lot of care. It can also take quite a while for an orchid to bloom. And once in bloom, the eyecatching flowers last for a long time, which is why they are also a symbol of longevity.

Orchid Feng Shui Colours

Just like florals may have deeper significance, so too do their colours in interior design. Choosing an orchid in a particular colourway is thus another way to add layers of symbolism to your interior.

Here are some colour choices to embrace feng shui in your space…

Purple is the most auspicious orchid colour. It is also a symbol of respect, admiration, and dignity.

As a symbol of grace, gentleness, innocence, playfulness, joy, happiness, and fertility, the pink orchid is a beautiful bloom to celebrate growing families.

White is considered a less auspicious colour for an orchid in feng shui, so it isn’t recommended as a feng shui adjustment. However, you can still enjoy the beauty of a white orchid in your home. This fresh flower is not only a symbol of purity, but represents elegance, beauty, humility, innocence, safety, and faith.

Yellow represents stability and strength. A refreshing and bright yellow orchid is the perfect bloom to celebrate a new chapter, cherished friendship, or just to brighten someone’s day with a little cheer.

It may be a real challenge to care for growing plants in your home, and orchids, in particular, need extra special care. As such, we recommend investing in silk flowers that require no maintenance. They look good, are easy to care for and will always stay in bloom.
