Q&A With Master Ceramicist Mervyn Gers
Collaborating with renowned artists and working on exclusive projects and designs, we are elated to share some of the latest inside info from Mervyn Gers with a Q&A with the master ceramicist himself.
The work pf Mervyn Gers fully embraces colour and design – giving rise to beautiful and unique pieces that have been carefully crafted with every attention to detail.
We chatted to Mervyn Gers about what makes him tick as an artist and where he finds inspiration for his designs. This is what he had to share:
What’s your go-to colour choice?
Dark blue.
Is there a hotel, interior or building that most inspires your work?
The Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, as well as Yesil Ev Hotel, which is an old restored Ottoman House also in Istanbul.
A place you love to visit?
Turkey, Istanbul in particular.
Where do you go to spot new styles?
I go on late night safaris.
Do you have a favourite restaurant?
It depends on what I feel like eating! Saigon has been my neighbourhood local for 20 years – I’ve found their food to be fresh and consistent.
Who or what is your biggest design influence?
Korean and Japanese ceramics. Mid century and 70’s shapes and palettes.
Any interesting projects you are working on?
Just completed a range of 18 new glazes, inspired by the Northern Cape’s textures and colours. I was born in the province and the landscape has also been close to my heart.
