KARE Design SA : Karin Cawthorne talks Passion for Design
Known for its imaginative and inspirational designs, KARE Design has been delighting design lovers since it was founded in 1981, with each piece expressing the brand’s intense passion for design. We chatted with Karin Cawthorne, franchise owner of KARE Design Johannesburg to learn more about her creative drive and the future of design in South Africa.
You’re known for your immense passion for interior design. Where did it all begin?
“Interior design has been my passion since I was very young. I always bought House & Leisure and Wallpaper magazines as soon as they were on the shelves! It’s the design and beauty of asimple chair or a happy, bright vase or deco object that evokes emotion, that keeps me passionate about this industry every day. When I visited my first KARE store in Jakarta about 11 years ago, I knew I wanted to own one one day.”
What lessons have you learnt since starting KARE Design Johannesburg?
“That customer service and understanding the needs of your client is so important. You must have an understanding of the client’s vision and how important it is for them to make their living space their own. Interior design is such a personal thing – it reflects who you are and what makes you happy every day, so at KARE Design we try to ensure that we always keep this in mind with our clients.”
Please share some of your proudest highlights in your career.
“KARE Design Johannesburg was in the top three when KARE in Munich – our head office – awarded the prize for the best team internationally. This makes me so proud because I couldn’t have done this without my wonderful staff and their commitment to the store. It’s also a proud moment for me anytime a publication features our distinctive designs.”
What does sustainable design mean to you and what more should we be doing to promote it?
“Sustainability in interior design is the responsibility of everyone in the industry, to ensure an improved state of living. The use of eco-friendly products, like bamboo, restored wood, recycled aluminium and natural stone is imperative for preserving our natural resources. Design should be a thoughtful, conscious process to reduce waste and improve our environment in general.”
What challenges have you faced throughout the years and how did you overcome them?
“The COVID lock-down and the aftermath thereof was very challenging for us but we’ve managed to keep going and we’re still going strong.”
What drives you?
“Passion! I’m passionate about design and highlighting the unique and mind-blowing talent in our industry.”
What does the future look like for the décor and design industry in South Africa, and what is your hope for it?
“The interior design landscape in South Africa is unique and diverse. The focus has shifted to smart homes and we have the resources and talent to not only embrace it but also draw inspiration from vibrant colours and textures, unique to SA, while incorporating international Trends.”
