How to fake it in high style: Silk by Design shares top tips for decorating with faux flowers and foliage.

Everlasting, easy on the pocket and low in maintenance, silk flowers and foliage have been revived, refreshed and welcomed back into homes across the globe.

“Style should be effortless,” says Sue McNair, owner of Durban-based Silk by Design, which supplies silk flowers, silk flower arrangements and artificial trees to both the local and international markets.

“We pride ourselves on our workmanship and our attention to detail and only use high-quality silk flowers in our silk flower arrangements. Our team of in-house florists, led by our Head Florist Albertina Nzuza, are passionate about their craft and love to see the reactions that their beautiful flower arrangements can uncover in our customers.”

But how to incorporate silk flowers and arrangements into your home for a look that’s more stylish than faux?

Here, the team from Silk by Design shares some top tips.

Choose the perfect spot

“Finding the right spot for your artificial flower arrangements is essential for maximizing their impact.

“Create a focal point on your dining table with a stunning artificial flower centerpiece. Select arrangements that are not too tall, allowing your guests to see each other across the table or make a lasting first impression by placing an artificial flower arrangement in your entryway. Or transform your fireplace mantel into a focal point by arranging artificial flowers in a cascading or asymmetrical design. Consider incorporating other decorative elements such as candles or mirrors to create a visually appealing display.”

Select the correct artificial arrangement

“Deciding on the ideal floral design for your home involves considering various factors such as your personal style, the room’s aesthetic, and the arrangement’s size and colour.

“For this, take into account your overall home decor style, including the colour scheme and furniture, and the ambience you want to create. Consider the existing textures, patterns, and design elements. This will help you choose an artificial flower arrangement that harmonizes with the room’s aesthetic rather than clashing with it.”

Keep size and proportions in mind

“Measure the available space where you plan to display the artificial flower arrangement. Consider the height, width, and depth of the area to ensure that the arrangement fits well without overpowering or appearing too small. You want the arrangement to be proportionate to the surrounding elements and furniture.”

Consider the lighting in the space

“Take into account the natural lighting in the room. If the space receives plenty of sunlight, consider artificial flowers that mimic the appearance of flowers that thrive in bright conditions. For rooms with less natural light, opt for flowers that can add a touch of brightness and vibrancy.”

Think about maintenance

“Assess your personal preferences and lifestyle when it comes to maintenance. Some artificial flower arrangements require occasional cleaning or dusting to keep them looking their best. Consider whether you are willing to invest the time and effort required for maintenance or if you prefer a low-maintenance option.”
