What’s New At The Cape Art Gallery
As we speedily head toward the second half of the year, we’re celebrating our local artists. We’re also taking a look at what’s happening on the art scene with the latest shows on at The Cape Art Gallery.
Let’s Make It Real
Ending on 11 June 2022, ‘Let’s Make it Real’ has been presented at The Cape Gallery, 60 Church Street, Cape Town.
Dated back to the 1980s, artists whose works were shown in ‘Let’s make it real’ are a testament to the successful mentorship programmes that took their talent to the next level.
Many of the artists were mentored at CAP, The Foundation School of Arts, The Visual Art Group in Nyanga or Rorke’s Drift in the late 1990s Art Centre. Some of these artists have also participated in the Thupelo workshops at Greatmore Studios.
The Gallery has included two younger artists; Boyce Magandela and Meshack Tembani because their work carries a similar narrative and content. More than explicit, these works speak of the plight in the overcrowded townships. It is an experience of the struggles, the joys of the jazz concerts and Friday night dances, and drinking at the shebeens. They subsequently speak the unedited truth of life in the townships.
The entire show is therefore an experience. An invitation to get to know these artists and the journey they took to get to where they are today.
