Nando’s 2018 Hot Young Designers

The October 20th edition of Art&Design Saturday at Keyes Art Mile is proud to partner with the infamously creative brand, Nando’s, to bring audiences a dramatic exhibition by the 2018 Hot Young Designers and an Emporium featuring Nando’s designers based at 99 Juta Street.

Nando’s has always been committed to providing a platform for South African creativity to grow, and the results of the Nando’s Hot Young Designers Competition are eagerly anticipated each year. This year’s competition has focused on fabric designers.

Finalists have been selected and their designs will be featured in a major installation at Keyes Art Mile from 20 October – 8 November. Conceptualised by Tracy Lynch, Creative Director of the Nando’s Design Programme, the announcement of the winner will be made against this backdrop on Saturday October 20th at 11h30.

Anatomy Design at Keyes Art Mile will also be participating with an installation in their window showcasing the fabric printed pattern designs of the Nando’s Hot Young Designer top 10 finalists, against a backdrop of fabric by the 2018 winner.

Our monthly Emporium partners with 99 Juta Street to feature a selection of products by local designers based at the new Braamfontein design development that work with Nando’s to create their casas around the world. They include:

Houtlander

Dokter and Misses is a product and furniture design duo operating out of Johannesburg since 2007. They are known for their whimsical and weird design language that fuses graphic and sculptural forms.

Houtlander is a team of passionate craftsman who strive to make considered, timeless furniture. The pair draw on South African as well as Scandinavian craft traditions, translating and transforming different cultural references to create minimalist, contemporary pieces.

Joe Paine is a product and furniture designer from Johannesburg aiming to produce original products that are both interesting visually and conceptually, as they are to use. Born from processes found within the industrial vernacular of Johannesburg and of its spirit, the products can be both hard-edged and delicate in one breath.

Mash T Design Studio was established by Thabisa Mjo, who sees herself as a storyteller rather than a designer. She is interested in evoking meaningful responses from the people whose traditions and fashions are reflected in the interior design products she creates. Her work incorporates traditional African materials into cool but playful creations.

Monique Vee is a South African interior and product designer known for bold, new interpretations of space and functional objects. She aims to suggest alternative ways to experience space and objects, evaluating what is necessary to perform functions and how these functions may be organised to emote enhanced client and user interactions.

TheUrbanative is a contemporary African furniture and product design company in South Africa. Their products are defined and differentiated by the juxtaposition of abstracted ethnic cultural graphics and motifs with the functionality and feel of classical European Mid-century and Bauhaus furniture silhouettes.

Art&Design Saturday visitors are also encouraged to pop into stores and restaurants along the Keyes Art Mile. In the atrium of Trumpet on Keyes, True Design – featuring international designs from Kartell, Moroso and Cassina – will be open for browsing, shopping and consultation. At street level, Okapi, Anatomy, Shelflife, MilkBar and BGR will be open for shopping or a quick casual lunch. The Mesh Club and Mix Cocktail Bar, as well as Marble and the newly opened MomoKuro, will be ready for visitors who enjoy a first class view of the Johannesburg skyline.

And, of course, the galleries will all be open. TMRW Gallery is hosting walkabouts with the artists featured “Old Masters I New Realities”. Join Wayne Barker at 10am and Lady Skollie at 12pm to learn about their work and wider practices.

SMAC Gallery invites visitors to the last day of ‘offstage’, a solo exhibition of new works by Frances Goodman.

The Everard Read and CIRCA Galleries are showing their new exhibitions “Maquettes for the Freedom Statue” by Anton Momberg and “Feu Sacre (Sacred Fire) by Guy Ferrer as well as Ricky Burnett and Ian Redelinghuys’ long anticipated exhibition, “Vis-a-vis”.
