Learn how to choose the correct size artwork for your space with artist Brett Field.

Selecting artwork for your space is a deeply personal and creative endeavour but deciding on the perfect size can often be a challenging task.

Here, artist Brett Field explains what to keep in mind when selecting artwork for your space to ensure the fit is just right.

Assess your wall space

Begin by assessing the wall where you intend to display your artwork. Take the dimensions, architectural elements and existing furniture arrangement into account. A larger wall, for example, may require a striking, bold piece of art, while a smaller wall might be best suited for a more delicate artwork.

Create visual harmony

Visual balance is key. Your wall is a canvas and the artwork should coexist harmoniously with other elements in the room. For instance, if you have substantial furniture beneath the wall, opt for artwork that complements it without overshadowing it.

Consider proportions and scale

To maintain balance, consider the proportions and scale of the room. If you have high ceilings or a spacious room, choose larger artwork to maintain proportionality. An oversized piece can create a captivating focal point.

For more compact areas or rooms with lower ceilings, opt for smaller or medium-sized art. This prevents your art from overwhelming the space.

Reflect on functionality

The function of the room should also influence your choice of artwork size. In the living room, a larger artwork can make a bold statement. Consider the viewing distance from seating areas when determining the ideal size.

For a soothing ambience in the bedroom, medium-sized artwork or a well-curated gallery wall is ideal.

In a workspace, choose smaller to medium-sized artwork that is visually stimulating but not distracting. It should encourage concentration and productivity.

Test the waters

Before committing to an artwork size, visualise it in your space. Use an app or design programme or create paper cutouts to simulate the size and placement. This exercise will help you assess whether the artwork feels right in the space and whether it complements the surrounding elements effectively.
