Carl Potgieter – Artist & Coffee Table Designer
From upcycled furniture pieces to imaginative new ones and surrealist artworks, artist and furniture maker Carl Potgieter is busy carving out a creative space for himself on the South African design scene.
The artist’s portfolio includes not only surrealist and abstract artworks but also cityscapes and portraiture, as well as unique coffee table designs – many of which are made out of antique suitcases the artist finds.
“My art career experience is advanced and diverse,” explains the artist who often helped his father with woodwork projects and who enjoys using a wide variety of mediums.
Carl’s artistic flair was discovered in his first year at school. The children were asked to make something out of clay. He made a boot. This piece was placed on display to show the intricate detail and precision.
Since then, the artist spent countless hours reading all he can about art and mastering various art forms and techniques, including water painting, portrait drawing, oil pastel artworks and more.
Some of his recent works include Scarlet Feathers (acrylic paint on stretched canvas), Dark Matter ((acrylic paint on stretched canvas), and The Gardener ((acrylic paint on stretched canvas)
To date, the artist has participated in the Rosebank Rotary Art Festival and GCE Portrait Competition and the Sasol New Art Competition and has also exhibited at the Alice Art Gallery.
