The company’s values and vision aligned so perfectly with their own that it was a natural fit. Let’s hear from The Whippet’s founder and CEO, Divan Botha, to find out more about this homegrown brand.

Tell us more about The Whippet and how it all started

The Whippet was started by four passionate entrepreneurs (Suzanne, Braam, Divan and Izelle). We said we wanted South Africans to fall in love with their neighbourhoods again – local to us meant understanding the history of our suburbs and support the small businesses and artists, the real heartbeat of those suburbs. Our business is simple – wherever we can procure locally we do that – we believe South Africa is best served by local entrepreneurs that create local jobs.

Our home is the leafy suburb of Linden, Johannesburg South Africa. This suburb, once one of the biggest export regions of peaches to the United Kingdom, sits in the centre of this African metropolis. nearly century old peach trees still stand proud in backyards and new generations climb their branches. We are proud to call Linden our home. Our food and drinks are a reflection of this vibrant neigbourhood and its people.

And what about the coffee?

Each bean is hand-selected and ethically sourced from our farming partners. They are roasted by our all female roasting team and then bagged and shipped with love and care into the home of South Africans. Whether it’s our classic Whippet Ethiopian Costa Rican blend or our Two Continents or single origin Nigaragua coffees – each bag creates local jobs and contributes to a better and more prosperous South Africa. Each carries Gold Bean Accreditation and the passion of over 30 Whippet staff members.

What’s in store for the future?

Our core ethos and passion is to create more local jobs. We will persist on our mission to create 100 new South African jobs and will continue our passion for everything local.
